@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place I suppose what I trust about Valve... I don't think Gabe should have that much money, nor do I like how he accrued it all. But Valve does seem to understand, as a company, that destroying enclosures benefit us all, and funding open source software is a boon.

He's a bit like a Good King, I suppose. Having a Good King do good things is good; it doesn't mean a monarch having that much control is a good idea or that you have to believe in the monarchy or be happy with all the decisions made. But I am happy about these decisions and there is some level of trust, there, for them to do the right thing in this regard under these circumstances.

Would I still like to work for Valve if I was in the market and had skills they needed? Yeah, probably, because it sounds like it would be an opportunity to use some of those taxes towards doing positive things in tech.

There's really no such thing as a good king, but.

@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place ugh, I don't even wanna think about what a successor to Gabe would... who would it even be? What would it look like? How much is Gabe's personal wealth vs. Valve's balance? etc. So many unknowns. bleh.

@aud @aeva I desperately hope that Valve becomes employee owned after Gabe retires or dies. That's really the only way I think the "benign monopoly" Valve has continues.
