I owe Merlin Mann @hotdogsladies a debt of gratitude. In 2005 he introduced me to #GTD. Twenty years!
For the first ten years I flailed around: didn't really get it, couldn't find the right software, didn't have an #ADD diagnosis.
In the last ten years, it clicked. Narrowed the scope and dropped irrelevant cargo-culting from GTD, got treated, and wrote my own #OrgMode customizations. Another big part was Merlin's wise encouragement to be gentle to yourself.
Also twenty years of working on something habitually pays off.

@jameshowell @hotdogsladies I believe it was around the same time for me! I was still in school but through the magic of finding interesting early day blogs online, GTD came into my life just when I was about to be overwhelmed with graduating. 🌠
What are your org-mode customizations like? I admit I've fallen off the bandwagon in the last decade and now just wing it :)

@ctietze My tweaks to Org mode are each trivial, and likely uninteresting to anyone else. Almost all of them are methods visually to hide things in order to examine items one at a time. Lots of keybindings to reduce friction. Everything possible to reduce distractions, decisions, executive fatigue.
The point is that within the System EVERY transaction is MINE. And that with email (mu4e) and tasks/projects (Org) tightly integrated and optimized to my personal quirks and whims, the whole is much, much greater than the sum of its parts.
These successes require a tiny bit of coding skill, alas, but much more crucially they required the Four Freedoms.

Yes, being able to take control is key and not really understood by many.My Emacs is just that: mine. It works how I want it to work (mostly ;-)).
