When the Framework Desktop was announced and pretty much all of the marketing for that was AI crap, I found it a little off-putting, but okay, it's not for me, I guess. Going out of your way to promote a white supremacist's dotfiles cosplaying as a distro is so beyond the pale that I can't even wrap my head around it

Less than 24 hours after my last post, Framework was just announced as the newest corporate sponsor of Hyprland.

It is becoming very, very difficult to assume ignorance or otherwise benign intentions. The fact that Framework has exclusively promoted these projects on Twitter seems to suggest that they know what kind of audience they'll find approval with

It sounds like discussions have been bubbling up in the Framework community Discord around the company's active promotion of far-right-aligned projects. I was able to participate today, and a Framework team member saw fit to weigh in after the fact.

I don't find this notion persuasive--that a company can provide material support to a person or organization, one that publicly espouses bigoted viewpoints, in a way that's morally neutral. I also don't think it holds up to any real scrutiny. The Linux and open source communities are far from homogeneous; one look around this place will tell you as much. You couldn't find any means through which to support open source without giving money and a platform to bigots? Really?

A business that differentiates itself on its ethics is in an ideal position to take a stand on what kind of company it chooses to keep. And at this moment in time, I think it is more important than ever to have principles. I can't imagine open source, or tech at all, without the contributions of Black people, or people of color, or trans people. Some people feel differently about it, and we're meant to keep the "politics" out of it, because it's just code! These aren't mere differences of opinion that we should all just overlook for the good of FOSS. This is people's basic fucking humanity that's somehow, appallingly, up for debate and I'm not going to be party to it.

Until @frameworkcomputer chooses to do better, I'm done. I'm so disappointed.

Well, now that Framework and its CEO have made their "big tent", apolitical aspirations clear to us all, let *me* be equally clear about where I stand:

If the institutions of Linux and open source are so fragile that they could not possibly thrive without the support of open fascists, they are morally bankrupt and deserve to fail.

At this moment in global politics, the suggestion that we should all be willing to curry favor with far-right bigotry in the interest of hastening The Year of The Linux Desktop is as embarrassing as it is offensive. I can't even pretend to take it seriously. If you genuinely think that marginalized people are acceptable collateral damage in pursuit of better support for your favorite computer operating system, we have much bigger differences to reconcile than our software preferences. I would really urge you to examine that line of thinking.
