The country is subdivided into 20 regions, but five have a higher level autonomy than others.

Regions are sub-divided into provinces (but not always). There are 80 ordinary provinces, 2 autonomous provinces, 4 regional decentralization entities, 6 free municipal consortia, and 14 metropolitan cities, as well as the Aosta Valley region ๐Ÿคฏ

Historically, Campione d'Italia had been outside of the ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ European Union customs zone, but in 2020 that changed. Previously it had IT and CH postal codes, but now only the IT system is valid. But they still use the CH phone systems.
