2/ So whatโs geoweird about Italy ๐ฎ๐น you ask? First up, Italy entirely contains not one, but two other independent countries: The Vatican ๐ป๐ฆ and San Marino ๐ธ๐ฒ #geoweirdness

3/ Part of ๐ฎ๐น Italyโs border with France ๐ซ๐ท runs along Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe ๐๏ธโท๏ธ
The exact ownership of the summit has been disputed for centuries.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mont_Blanc#Ownership_of_the_summitHappily, the border "dispute" is pretty low stress, but occasionally there is a bit of noise:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campione_d%27Italia
Historically, Campione d'Italia had been outside of the ๐ช๐บ European Union customs zone, but in 2020 that changed. Previously it had IT and CH postal codes, but now only the IT system is valid. But they still use the CH phone systems.

5/ Italy ๐ฎ๐น expanded in 1954 when the Free Territory of Trieste was dissolved and its territory split between Italy and Yugoslavia (today Slovenia ๐ธ๐ฎ and Croatia ๐ญ๐ท) Legally this was not confirmed until 1975.

6/ ๐ฎ๐น Italy's internal organization is ... complicato.
The country is subdivided into 20 regions, but five have a higher level autonomy than others.
Regions are sub-divided into provinces (but not always). There are 80 ordinary provinces, 2 autonomous provinces, 4 regional decentralization entities, 6 free municipal consortia, and 14 metropolitan cities, as well as the Aosta Valley region ๐คฏ

7/ You might not know there is a province of Italy ๐ฎ๐น where German is the official language: South Tyrol (known as Sรผdtirol in de, Alto Adige in it).
Most places there have two (or more) names. A few years back we interviewed local mapper Martin Raifer @tyr about mapping in the area

9/ As always we hope you enjoyed our look at the #geoweirdness of Italy ๐ฎ๐น Thanks for reading (and sharing).
We have many more threads about specific countries, border disputes, geocoding, etc listed on our blog. Most still on twitter, but over time we are moving them here to mastodon. Enjoy.

We'll feature more countries in coming weeks and months

10/ Apologies almost forgot this delightful ๐ฎ๐น Italy-focused geo project by @bndktgrs that you should all check out.
He attempts to answer the ultimate geospatial question: "Do all roads lead to Rome?"
