<![CDATA[Have you ever wondered which cities are mentioned the most in the Fediverse?]]>Have you ever wondered which cities are mentioned the most in the Fediverse? I did! I built a small tool that checks the hashtags for the biggest cities in DE, AT, CH, NL, GB, IT, FR and DK.

This is only a small, limited analysis, but you can see lots of dots everywhere, especially in bigger cities, and generally in Germany and the Netherlands. [1/3]

What's certain is that not every place listed is a city.

For Munich I would recommend sending the requests to muenchen.social instead of mastodon.social, because even the baseline is higher.

The original names are coming from Wikidata and are the name in the primary country language. Then the software would get "Köln" and would try different hashtag-ify versions, because Mastodon would convert it to "Koln".

I tested in the beginning different German speaking instances. Norden.social had quite different numbers for northern and southern cities. I also tested a relay, but this had way lower numbers. I guess mastodon.social is a good compromise. Otherwise, the software would create way more traffic.
In the end, accurately mapping a diverse federated service is never 100% accurate.
Sidenote: Munich is also a worse example because different Fediverse software will work/count munchen, münchen, and some people even use muc as hashtags.

I guess belgium would be also harder because in the current setup I inly have one primary language for every country. I guess for switzerland this is still working?

I do not know about a better way for this. I guess even if every city would have their official hashtag, why should cede their hashtag to a german thingy :D

Befor I did this project I did not now, that their was a also Washington in the UK :D but in germany we also have multiple cities with the same name.

wetter: 295 uses might be false cause "wetter" is not only a city but the german word for weather, and a very small city? But (german word for eating / food and of tge biggest cities in germany) only has 62 uses, so it seems only real cities are mentioned.?

maybe some smaller cities but with a big university = more active users (students) are mentioned more often.?

Might be that the spelling people use is different for what the system checks it with?
