I was lucky enough to get a mortgage years ago when such things were feasible. When we were able, we overpaid, reducing the capital, and therefore both the interest and the monthly payments. Our current monthly repayment is a small fraction of what we'd be paying to rent, and we're also on a deal vastly better than any to be had now.
Things have changed a lot since we first bought - we have two neurodiverse kids, I'm physically disabled, and the world has descended into omnicrisis. The headroom we have from our housing costs being so low is making a huge difference to our daily lives.
