Tech people talk about tech too much.

  • Tech people talk about tech too much.

I really really REALLY want to use all the awesome privacy friendly FOSS (and similar) stuff, but I am not a techie person! I don't know how to program, nor do I want to.

And every SINGLE time I try to find out even what thing (OS, program, app, service, etc) to use, let alone how, and I search for it... I get techie-focused answers.

It's complete gibberish to me! Absolutely useless. It makes me feel actively unwelcome even though I really care about using alternatives to Windows, Meta, X and other dystopic nonsense.

For example: I'm like "How do I start a non-enshittified group chat to talk about a thing?" and all the results are technobabble to me. I don't even know if the words they use are supposed to be normal english words or if they refer to orgs or groups or apps or some weird coding wizardry.

I am so lost, every single time.

I stick with it though. But like. I wonder if the tech people realise that this is happening???? Because they probably understand what they're talking about. And they seem to not realise that not everyone does.

I'm not trying to blame or shame anyone or even complaining as such (a little bit complaining, ngl), mostly just giving feedback. This is not an issue with a singe thing but with ALL of it as a whole! Including the and most apps.

My sincere wish: Give non-techie people an EASY TO FIND and easy to read and easy to understand and easy to implement guide about how to use the things as an alternative to using big corporation services, ie, "I just want it to work" and not have to worry about the technical side of things. (examples in thread)

Good morning This account is still alive. This morning I was thinking about my privacy. Many say that fediverse is more private. But they do not say that when post are send to servers, we do not know how each servers react. For example this message publish 2025-12-09 will stay on different servers untilll .... I don't know. I will remove it from my server but some server keeps it 'for ever'. In 2028 maybe someone will see that message. But this account will not exists anymore. Now I delete only message from my server. In the future I will delete my own post remotely. I don't know yet how but I will learn. #fediverse #activitypub #question #thinking

I find this idea very innovative and exciting. It is being developed by Fedilab, and separates data from relay (a bit like AtProto does) to allow everyone to keep their data, even on a phone Holos - a mobile ActivityPub server that runs on your phone. A relay server maintains your stable identity when you're offline. Switch between text, photos, videos, and articles from a single account. Currently in private development, sharing progress with the community. The account following the development has just 3 posts (with some light technical details) at the time of writing, but the stuff should be published on Codeberg soon.

I do have #openbsd as dualboot option together with #linux installed. My only problem with that is that a sysupgrade overwrites my grub and i then have to boot the linux installation once with a live-system to run a grub-install again.I wonder if it is possible to avoid this annoying little step every 6 months.
