Hello the #fediverseI had an account at SDF but it was pseudoanonymous & mostly barren so thought I'd invite myself here (thanks for having me!)

  • Important announcement, especially for BSD Cafe friends who don’t have a local account.

Over the past few days I noticed that, when browsing some public pages on our Mastodon server (especially the federated timeline, meaning posts coming from other instances as well), certain content could appear without a CW and in some cases it was pornographic, illegal, or generally not suitable for a general audience.
The problem is that this was visible even to users who were not logged in, which effectively made BSD Cafe a gateway to that content. Also, some media files are cached on our server, so it could look like BSD Cafe is the source of it.

For this reason I had to make a decision: I have disabled the ability for non-logged-in visitors to view posts coming from other instances.
This way, anyone visiting BSD Cafe without an account will only see BSD Cafe local content, helping us avoid potential issues, including legal ones.
Some of you (from other instances) thought you had been blocked because you could no longer see your posts here, but that is not the case: your posts are still fully visible to local users, as usual.

I have also re-enabled (at least for now) hashtag browsing, since BSD Cafe is one of the most well federated instances for BSD-related content and it would be a shame to lose that. However, I may reconsider this decision if it leads to problems.

Let me know if you notice anything unusual.

  • @CathyBikesBook I've settled on Tusky. There's also alternative web frontends that can be used as PWAs like Phanpy that are quite interesting feature wise

  • @blag if you liked something, like it. If you think others might be interested in it, or should see it, boost it. If you have something to say, reply to it. This is my strategy.

  • @emsquared Absolutely! I still prefer Elk on desktop.

  • @candide Still got love for Elk BTW. Used it for a long while but Phanpy has that X factor.

  • @candide ah great. Glad you are getting on with it. Bit quirky at first but it works really sickly. The catchup feature is the secret weapon. Enjoy.

  • @emsquared Thank you for the Phanpy recommendation! I've been using it for a few days now and I absolutely love how it handles boosts! I thought it being a PWA would be an issue, but it actually works out really nicely. I like it even more than my previous favorite web app, Elk.

  • @stefan @cheeaun unfortunately I don't have any information on that (and we don't track specifics so it would be difficult to comment I think; will ask some folks about it though)

I think the wrapping in <p> is just plain good practice because otherwise rendered content could be injected somewhere resulting in invalid HTML. Not that browsers ever reject bad HTML anyway heh</p>

Grandiose day! However I haven’t read the book yet thou’. I spent my evening today building a automation by forking Tinker hack Blusky integration for running playlist etc. I am halfway there but when I run tested it – the last block doesn’t seem to work so I’ve contacted them about it. I hope soon to get help. This year I did lot of techie projects for myself like vibe coding built ways for me after taking course on ai and then vibecoding snake game and all of that. Later, doing html/css course to understand the basics and loving it all and then jamming up with neocities more. This year I also got excited with Nothing community project challenge – and built a marketing plan even the date was done and all. As I got to know late – being so inspired by the brand I went ahead and did something cool too. Nothing has cool software and hardware. The UI is cool as they say it. Got back to the ropes of smartphones as I grabbed Vivo iQOO Z10X as my daily driver – as they call it! I’ve since loved watching tech videos alot. I do love tech. I am not very much diving into fitness gadgets as of yet. As that would just tumble me down of anxiety passage I find.Well, the Founder of Mastodon is giving the next baton to new guy. Felix! Also, Eugen did a wonderful job with Mastodon. I saw his interview on YouTube while dinnering my way up through the day. I also read how a 101 year old Barista has been serving since WWII – that was the good news over bsky this morning. Also one 87 year old lady did something cool – which I don’t recall. You know we don’t care much to remember good news as we keep bad news itched in our brain for like whole time and all. Bad news is impactful is it? It creates fear and then that becomes memorable all of a sudden. Ah!

"“I’m going back to the #Fediverse. Back to #Mastodon. To the nerds, the hobbyists, the idealists. The people who don’t talk about reach, but about relevance. To those who understand that decentralization isn’t nostalgic, it’s the future. That digital sovereignty isn’t a gimmick, it’s a survival strategy.Yes, the Fediverse is sometimes clunky, nerdy, uncomfortable. But it belongs to us" — @pallenberg, quoted (and translated) by @hildabast https://absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2025/10/30/a-mastodon-migration-from-bluesky-would-be-different/
