Should I start 'liking/starring' posts again?
Context: I've tried to be more actively engaged here by forcing myself to only boost or reply but am now thinking about flexing my star button again.
@blag If people boost too much and flood my timeline I tend to switch off boosts on their account. Not suggesting you do that, and I do like to see occasional boosts in lieu of algorithmic suggestions, but might be a consideration.

@blag starring is a good way to tell people you appreciate their posts even if you do not want to share it further.

@blag I always prefer replies. I find people that way. Seldom do stars catch my attention.
@ee Yes, replies are my favourite too, and this exercise forced me to consider how/where I could do more of that. I started doing it negative I felt that likes/stars were somewhat 'passive', but then they do offer up a feedback mechanism outside of wanting to share and/or reply.

@grob Yes, it's a bit like a hierarchy of engagement progressing from stars to replies, with boosts in between.

@grahamdunning Yes, I try not to be indiscriminate with my boosting, and appreciate the new stuff I see as a result of others doing the same. Likes on the other hand seem to be more like a 1-2-1 feedback mechanism between viewer and poster, while replies are the most solid form of 'engagement'.
Something I like doing is just muting someone for a month, and then seeing how I feel when their posts/boosts return to my timeline.

@blag That's a nice idea. I do wish there was a "show one post per day" button or similar. Like, some bots I would like to follow just post too often, so I don't bother. Anyway, very minor gripes!

@grahamdunning Yes, I definitely agree on the bots front, as I think that one post per day is generally sufficient from them versus actual humans.
But, as you say, it's small beer when zooming out and considering all the benefits of this place versus other social media.

@blag There’s no algorithm to feed. So all interactions have value. Star as much as you want. Reply. Boost. Nothing else will do it for you.

@blag The only use of staring is, that you show love to the post and might find it again (depending on your app). It won’t amplify a post other than people see its appreciation and might boost it therefore.
I’m also careful with boosting, because too many boosts make me mute boots for accounts I follow.

@blag I mean... It won't hurt anything. Replies are nicer to get, of course, but getting a star to my posts at least tells me someone read it and appreciated it. Which is always nice.

@eWalthert It's been a useful exercise, challenging me to consider 'higher' levels of engagement as alternatives to hitting 'like' as the feed drifts by.
But I'm hearing some good arguments in favour of sprinkling some star dust into the mix once again ⭐️

@CathyBikesBook I've settled on Tusky. There's also alternative web frontends that can be used as PWAs like Phanpy that are quite interesting feature wise

@emsquared Thank you for the Phanpy recommendation! I've been using it for a few days now and I absolutely love how it handles boosts! I thought it being a PWA would be an issue, but it actually works out really nicely. I like it even more than my previous favorite web app, Elk.

@stefan as for the linked post of Alice: yes, our instance was spammed by botnet, creating sever accounts spreading pro-russian propaganda (mostly, sometimes chaotically randomly interacting, for some time. I even had some chat with botnet operator (or maybe it was AI, but I doubt it). The demanded to cancel local pro-ukrainian account: it is not operated by me, and it is very polite, not even any gore videos or so, and it is anyway just mirror from Facebook (they like my local 2000 characters limit).
So I know, how this feels, kinda.
The "reply-guy" issue is completely different. We just tend to reply to certain topics. Sometimes we do it, because we consider it funny. Most of the replies are not intentionally hateful, but they may represent point of view alien to original post.
The LGBTQ topic is ... complicated, somehow. I actually started taking this seriously only after I saw Putin's propaganda machine targeting them as an example of "western decadence". Then I realized, that of course, that something is terribly wrong there and I saw the source of hate speech aligned with other types of propaganda, eg. climate change deniers.
While creating safe space for vulnerable minorities is important, I also seek kinda normal, non-safe, adult space: but just not controlled by corporations. So while I understand the need to leave eg. Xitter because of hate speech, and I don't want it there: I also want to do most of the stuff me and other people did on Xitter, we just don't want to be owned by the new owner.
And I am really not a minority of any kind (maybe just slightly neurodivergent, but probably rather typical). I just wanted to be somewhere else. I spent some effort to run the place and help to promote it. But my vision is not "minorities only", "safe space only". Of course: no nazi bar. But I am federalist, not intersectionalist.
Most people just seek interaction (with live people, no bots, no AI) and can withstand some amount of interaction...
