I reckon, exactly this lack of control and incompetent moderation across the network is, what drove e.g. so many Black people from the US away from the Fediverse into the arms of the next monolithic platform.

But what if I don't want a github account?

    wrong comparison, I guess...

I'd consider a blog being similar to a newspaper and comments being like readers letters... unsuitable for discussion between blogger and different readers to each other...

bloggers writing crap are simply ignored, tooters writing crap are spread through federal and local timelines to hundreds of thousands like on Twitter.

Such crappy tooters will block replies requiring hundreds of thousand to take action by blocking/reporting... happy times for mods

  • @stefan This would also be useful for those accounts that are run by a bot scraping an RSS feed. I'm not too fond of them, but they seem to have a use for some people.

More and more, it seems that Mastodon is just Telegram, if Telegram were designed by idiots. "Microblogging" is a silly conceit held by a minority of silly users. For the majority of users, Mastodon and all others are simply a modern version of IRC chat. The moment you respond to a post- it is chat (or even worse- a web forum).. the moment it becomes interactive, it becomes chat. Nothing more. Micro-blogging is conceptual nonsense. Any linking to an outside URL/website nullifies any conceit of "Micro-blogging".. it once again becomes mere IRC chat pointing to "click and look at my off-fedi website.." The fedi has existed for long enough now. The devs need to sit down and have a reality check. Sluff off any of the old idealism from 2010 that no longer fits or has lost relevance due to the shifting usage patterns of the majority. Fail at this and the Fedi, in it's own time will go the way of ICQ, AIM, IRC, and all the others that came before but were merely instances of the same old thing as before.

  • @shironeko I'd recommend going through the linked conversations about potential approaches, but in my mind, I'd imagine each server would reject replies that don't match the reply settings.

Yes, there will be servers, either running outdated fediverse software, or designed to ignore the settings, and the replies might be visible there, but their reach will be limited.

Obviously you can't stop people from talking about you in their dark corner far away, just like screenshots easily work around quote permissions. Or someone writing a blog post about you.

Still, what we have now is pretty subpar and I've seen too many people leaving the fediverse because they feel unsafe and unwelcome. And they tell their friends who will never come here.

    This has to change.

  • @stefan How would that even work, reply are not controlled by the poster's server right?

@untilted I can see how someone running an account that is especially attractive to trolls, especially an account that gets a lot of visibility and follow requests, might find this necessary. Keep in mind following an account isn’t just about reading the posts, but also can include followers only posts and DMs open to followers only.

@falcennial I like it so far! It's basically Zoo Tycoon. Wouldn't say that it's worth 48 euro's, but it's fun for now.

Hello FediverseIf everything works out according to plan, when I hit publish on this post it will show up in the #Fediverse. After a year of on-and-off attempts, to implement #ActivityPub on this website, with no success, I have hopefully cracked it! Well, when I say “I have hopefully cracked it,” what I mean is @pfefferle@mastodon.social and the #WordPress “open office hours” program, have cracked it. It turns out; if you have a problem with the WordPress ActivityPub plugin, the best thing to do is disable other plugins and, though a process of elimination, see if one of them is the issue. So big thanks to Mathias and WordPress for your help on this. Now this is working and I am broadcasting out into the Fediverse, I feel like I should modify my content a little to appeal to all of you woke, leftists, godless, communists 🙂 out there. For a while I was far too smitten with the every little #Sustainability initiative, every little carbon reduction program, and every other bit of  #GreenWashing that was put out there by brands. Full confession I actually believed that ElonMusk wanted to save the planet! Yeh I know, I was naive…While I do continue to applaud any actions that a corporation takes, that materially helps either people or planet, it’s clear that problems are systemic. We need corporations to shift from Shareholder Primacy to Stakeholder Capitalism, valuing environmental and social impact alongside profit. Or try someting completely different. Right now, if there is a more sustainable or ethical brand choice to be had, we should always take it, but we must understand, that we are not “saving the planet” with those choices, just minimising our impact. Nebula TV channel, Our Changing Climate,  has this excellent video on the subject of Ethical Consumerism. It turns out, that whoever first pointed out “Corporations are Psychopaths” was mostly correct – How a corporation is designed to function, putting shareholders before people and planet, is psychopathic behaviour. (Psychopathic behaviour includes a lack of empathy and remorse, superficial charm, manipulation, and a disregard for social norms and the rights of others.) The only solution is to rewrite corporate charters and incorporation acts and include specific legal provisions that mandate environmental and social responsibility, shifting the core purpose of business beyond mere profit maximisation. Ultimately Corporations and their leaders are never going to fully act in the best interests of people and planet, because that’s not what they were created to do.So the plan, for 2026, is to be posting more content here that challenges both brands and the whole system. To shine a light on the negative impacts to people and planet that brands are having. And to share more content about organisations and companies working on regeneration and decarbonisation. Please follow and share your thoughts and ideas below.#activitypub #branding #corporations #fediverse #sustaiability #sustainability #wordpress

@bovaz @stefan @tsadilas indeed. And for WordPress, the fact that you can e.g. comment on a WP article from the rest of the Fediverse really drives the “shared social network” concept. And IIRC they are working on making the integration even tighter (esp. in the other direction).I'm not familiar enough with Ghost's integration to comment on that though.
