Looking for Fediverse oddities!
I am super late, OVER THE DEADLINE to submit the slides of my talk at SFSCON 2025, but I still want to add a few little things, and I need tips.
My presentation ends by listing a few “crazy but true” things about the Fediverse.
Can you help me find a few more in the next couple hours?
So far I have:
- Truth Social uses Mastodon and it was forced to open-source its code after it was discovered
- Some public institutions host their own Fediverse instances!
- You could host a Fediverse server in your living room
- You can use a car’s on-board computer to power a Fediverse server
- You can synchronize your personal calendar with federated calendars from the Fediverse (using @gancio)
- You can buy indie music by paying an artist directly (using @bandwagon)
- You can do academic peer-reviews via the Fediverse (using @bonfire)
What else??? I only want cool or incredible things.

Wow, you sure are exemplifying the problem dude.Also, non-pseudonym posting is specifically dangerous for a lot of people, that's just an ignorant suggestion on the face of it. Anonymous assholes can still be blocked; doxxing yourself just makes it easier for those same assholes to harass you irl.

I completely agree. My specific mention of gender was a call to address a common, visible pattern of harassment (which I did witness earlier today and too often), but the goal is absolutely a safer space for everyone, across all lines. Solidarity is the only way we keep these communities human.

I you see people paternalistically reinforce harmful binary gender roles, say something. Take out the trash.There is no equality under capitalism, only equal exploitation.
If you see a person harassing another person, you intervene. You dont think about gender roles for one second. This is how solidarity functions. It is not limited to gender, to race, even to species. We live, therefore we take care. Animals who think and speak different than us can do it. We take example.

@donhawkins @terminaltilt Societies are group activities. A "you look after your own and I'll look after mine" attitude is, by definition, antisocial. If you're so disinterested in society, and people in general, don't pick fights. It doesn't help anyone, rather reinforces prejudices of the author, the audience, and makes you sound foolish. Causing someone to sling mud doesn't prove the world is a sewer, only that you cause it to be so when you appear. That's a weird power to exercise. So long!
