I joined the #fediverse back in the days (2018, with my own instance) because I wanted an alternative. A real alternative. With a fundamentally different approach. Decentralised. Even when it hurts. (federation and decentralisation is complicated!) And I think we are on the right track. What bothers me are the people that want the Fediverse to be 1:1 copycat of centralised services and as that isn't the case declare it to be a failed experiment. I'll stay here. It's better. Is all.

I'd much prefer to discuss how we can make decentralisation better instead of discussing how we can attract TikTok, Facebook, Twitter users. The #Fediverse, due to decentralisation, can raise the price of abuse. Centralised services make abuse cheap. I want to drive up the costs of surveillance and abuse. Simple. Because when abuse becomes expensive, authorities have to justify the costs of limiting our freedom. See #ChatControl

@jwildeboer I totally agree. I've never appreciated the "let's emulate the famous stuff" approach - and not only on Social Networks.
Let's be ourselves. Even if this will cost something. But, in the long term, it'll be a win. -

But, in the long term, it'll be a win.I find this has broader applications…some people want to make Linux (or BSDs) a Windows or OSX replacement in a similar fashion, or refuse to use a Linux or BSD because it doesn't do $THING that Windows/OSX does. But I *don't want* a Windows or OSX. I want that Unix feel, and I'll stay here, even if it's not as popular.
