Don't feel obliged to follow popular accounts here. The network will work just fine if you curate a smaller collection of moderately mutual friends. Check the "Local Timeline" of different instances who appeal to you, to find people to follow.

@bb2101 Lots of accounts. You should have a very low threshold for following, a low threshold for unfollowing, and low threshold for muting/blocking. Just follow. You can always unfollow later.
