  • @kathsone @esserci @filippodb @amministratore @anze3db @fedidevs wow this is going to be a troll discussion, please note there're plenty of starter pack from the same istance because the faq clearly says:

"It can be used to help new users find accounts to follow, or to promote specific communities or topics."

those idiots are clearly trolling, starter pack are made to privately promote a specific communities or whatever you want.

    just another italian example: https://fedidevs.com/s/NzYy/

  • @esserci Sorry, but I'm not interested in controversy. I just want to help solve what I think is a problem. But I don't want to start a controversy in public because, in any case, the problem doesn't directly concern me.

  • @kathsone that instance was created pretending to be the "Mastodon Italiana" instance, as if it were the official Italian server. It was a clever move because it attracted a huge number of users, but now they might as well stop using these tricks!

Unfortunately, it seems to me that administrators are tempted to confine their users in a cage where they try to keep following the same people from the same instance and the same promotional accounts.

  • You're absolutely correct! (Great, now I sound like ChatGPT)

That said I think that's where implementations like NodeBB and Mbin can apply a bit of pressure and act as intermediaries... we want federation to work well too, and we have to straddle both federation styles!

That gives a somewhat unique perspective on problems and solutions.

  • I honestly feel if the two paradigms did a little bit of effort on interoperation, we could figure this out. But all sides of this atm are like "the other side is doing it wrong" and refusing to look at this.

  • Can you please correct the naming of your Fedidevs.com starter packs?

    @filippodb @amministratore dear Mastodon.uno administrators,
I've noticed that some starter packs you've uploaded to the site have incorrect descriptions: they almost seem designed to promote ONLY USERS of your instance, while ignoring all other instances in the . In fact, they were all created by service accounts on the mastodon.uno instance.

This seems understandable, but I think it's urgent to rename the descriptions of those starter packs to specify that they are exclusively for users of your instance, otherwise they could mislead other users.

The starter packs in question are as follows:

Satira vignette e meme (created by the @satira account, a mastodon.uno service account)Retrogames (created by the @kickoffworld account, a mastodon.uno service account)Profili Free Open Source su Mastodon on Mastodon (created by the @opensource account, a mastodon.uno service account)Ambiente Mobilità sostenibile e giustizia climatica (created by the @ambiente account, a mastodon.uno service account)Fedilug Account Linux Italiani Account Italian Linux Accounts (created by the @linux account, a mastodon.uno service account)Sicurezza digitale (created by the @sicurezza account, a Mastodon.uno service account)Fediverso e Social network (created by the @socialnetwork account, a Mastodon.uno service account)

I repeat: it's right to advertise to your users, but it's important to explain that it's self-promotional advertising. For example, the Mastodon UNO & Official Devol Accounts starter pack clearly specifies that it refers to the users of your instance.

This is out of respect for all Italian users of the Fediverse and for the developers who created and made the fantastic Fedidevs resource available for free.

Thank you for your attention and have a good evening

  • Okay, that's fair. The hard requirement for a microblog user to have to follow the community is often too high a barrier (if only because it's not immediately apparent that this needs be done)

That said, Mastodon gets around patchy federation with mention spamming. Threadiverse gets around this with the distributor model (the community itself).

I don't know how to reconcile this from a technical perspective... yet.

Also @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com this is in response to you as well.

Destroying Autocracy – December 04, 2025Welcome to this week’s “Destroying Autocracy”.It’s your source for curated news affecting democracy in the cyber arena with a focus on protecting it. That necessitates an opinionated Butlerian jihad against big tech as well as evangelizing for open-source and the Fediverse. Since big media’s journalism wing is flailing and failing in its core duty to democracy, this is also a collection of alternative reporting on the eternal battle between autocracy and democracy. We also cover the cybersecurity world. You can’t be free without safety and privacy.FYI, my opinions will be in bold. And will often involve cursing. Because humans. Especially tech bros. And fascists. Fuck ’em.The Programmer’s Fulcrum is the future (and smaller) home for a fusion of Symfony Station and Battalion. Its tagline is Devs Defending Democracy, Developing the OMN.You can sign up now and for 2025 get an email with links to each week’s Symfony Station Communiqué and Battalion “Destroying Autocracy” post along with their featured articles. And you’ll be set with TPF after the fusing in January. We are posting on the Fediverse now at @thefulcrum @thefulcrum.dev and original website content will start next month.Featured Item(s)Hamish Campbell writes:ActivityPub is a shared vocabulary, a public language for moving meaning and connection across the open web. It gives you nouns and verbs, and the community defines the grammar through lived use. This is why the OMN works with ActivityPub, a metadata and meaning layer, not a platform, flows, not silos. ActivityPub is the widely deployed 4 Opens protocol that treats publishing as a flow, a conversation.Unlike the more vertical stacks (ATProto is a good example), ActivityPub doesn’t force a worldview. It doesn’t tell you, “this is how your network must be structured.” It doesn’t enforce hierarchy or lock you into one interpretation of identity, authority, or workflow. It’s a KISS path – here’s a shared language, verbs for publishing and receiving, express objects, updates, relationships. The rest is up to the commons. This flexibility is exactly why the OMN can become a part of this flow. Why the OMN works with ActivityPub – And why we need a bridge to p2pWe start and end with good news to make the middle bearable. The response to Russia’s War Crimes, Techno Feudalism, and other douchebaggeryDDEV has:Power Through Blackouts: How DDEV Community Helped Me in UkraineTechPolicy Press shares:How to Test New York’s Algorithmic Pricing LawThe EU’s Digital Omnibus Must Be Rejected by Lawmakers. ⚠️ Do not be HACKED !! 😱Software updates include not only new features but also critical security fixes. To keep your site secure and stable, ensure you always use the latest version. We frequently observe numerous sites across the Fediverse running very outdated versions of Mastodon or Misskey. Some sites are even using versions over a year old.Be the smart administrator and keep your site up to date.#Mastodon #Misskey #Fediverse #ActivityPub #PixelFed #PeerTube #InfoSec #Security

lambic@social.linux.pizza yes, following a Peertube account from Mastodon should allow you to view their videos as soon as they're posted. You should be able to play them from within your timeline too.
