I would advise caution with believing and spreading any claims about people being shadow banned on whatever website. While shadow banning is a real thing and it has occasionally been misused, most claims boil down to “I got less engagement than I expected on a post about a sensitive topic.”

It’s usually pure coincidence and occasionally a spam/abuse filter misfiring.

while researching the rubygems takeover situation, I ended up on the blog of someone who insists on using AI header images, and now instead of engaging with the actual post I’m stuck on “why is there a puppy on the table? WHY do the evil corporate overlords holding a sinister meeting have a PUPPY on the TABLE?”

but of course, there is no “why”; it wasn’t an artistic choice meant to convey anything deep or clever. This is much worse than no image or a boring image: it’s a nonsensical assault on the senses preventing any possible connection to meaning; it’s the bitwise inverse of art. It doesn’t decorate your writing, it casts a shadow of profound doubt upon it.

  • I’m trying to figure out what works better for alt text accessibility in practice — please reply ONLY if you ever actually use text-to-speech, braille interfaces, or anything similar for accessing the alt text of images.

I’m trying to figure out what works better for alt text accessibility in practice — please reply ONLY if you ever actually use text-to-speech, braille interfaces, or anything similar for accessing the alt text of images. (Boosts welcome.)

If I post a picture of writing in another language — say, Chinese — is it more frustrating to receive an imprecise general alt text like “a picture of Chinese calligraphy”, or for the actual unicode Chinese characters to be present in the alt text and shoved through your TTS? Does that just blast you with a bunch of numbers? Does it silently skip over non-western characters?

My intuition is that the unicode Chinese characters would not be very helpful in this use case unless the user’s computer is already set up for Chinese TTS specifically because they speak a Chinese language, but I figured I should check.

Tonight on translations that are almost as unhelpful as the idiom itself, “mark a boat to find a sword”:

There once was a guy on a boat
Who found out that swords do not float.
    He pulled out his dagger
    With native Chu swagger
And said “I’ll just make me a note.”

@batterpunts I've got well over 50. It's not just a color axis – some inks are "high-shading" (variable like a stroke of watercolor paint), others are a matte uniform color, some sheen different colors at different angles, some have glitter etc. And then there's specialties like iron gall, the traditional-since-ancient-times Extremely Permanent Ink

Why Americans Don't Walk To School - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lShDhGn5e5s

this neighborhood he filmed looks so much like America-as-I-know-her that it hurts. When I was a child, I lived in a housing development, a separate loop from the main road, nothing but houses on both sides for the whole loop. Sounds safe for kids, right? I was utterly forbidden from crossing the street ever, for any reason. In the three years I lived there, two children I knew were flattened by cars. One was in a wheelchair for years, the other had permanent brain damage. And we were lucky to have a sidewalk the whole length of the loop - which would quickly disappear beyond its edge; walking anywhere else was impossible, it was an island in a sea of high-speed roads.

The next development we lived in, the school had a street-by-street map of who was and wasn't allowed to walk to school. It was in theory a 15 minute walk, but we were forbidden because 10 of that would be on a highway with absolutely no accommodations for walking alongside it. There was a secret path through the woods that some kids used. There was a shopping center about as far in the other direction with, again, absolutely no way to walk there (and no busses). I grew up trapped in lonely fortresses in a sea of concrete, and I am still not used to the freedom I have in Europe to just... go places and do things.

Today on New Living Internet Translations:

Do not post in anger, do not get mired in a flamewar because you’re mad online. If a comment is in your cause’s favor, then post it; if it’s not then for FFS stop. Anger can be replaced by cat pics, the maddest online can still learn to touch grass — but a banned account isn’t getting unbanned, and the people who blocked you aren’t gonna unblock. Watch yourself, bro.
