Talking about "enshitiffication" in this article brings up the Grauniads own goal in enshittification, whereby they try to force you in their own anti-enshittification article to either subscribe, or allow them to scrape your data for advertising revenue!

Of course you CAN just hit Text Only Mode in suitable browsers, but how many average people know to do this?

There is something in the way our pattern recognition works that causes this (excepting many neurodivergent folx) in order to prevent us being overwhelmed.

As an autistic person I can attest to the distress that noticing "everything" can cause! So it would seem that this evolutionary trait is a double edged sword.

It is the same in Germany. The last, and possibly only, time a US Supermarket tried to open chains here they simply couldn't cope with the fact that employees have protections in law!
