Exactly. Spread education. Spread ideas. Channel the energy people have into useful activities. Don’t give up - do things that can add value to the resistance. Maybe it’s something small like reposting something on social media, signing a petition, asking someone to lead a local event, going to a town hall. Maybe it’s brushing up your own knowledge or helping others learn. Craftivism. Protesting. Not using Amazon. ANYTHING is SOMETHING.

Read Sebastian Haffner’s “Defying Hitler.” We’re past the point our government can help us. Civil Disobedience assumes a functioning representative democracy. This administration has dismantled too many agencies for citizens to seek redress for constitutionally protected harms, disregarded the judiciary and legislative branch, and our representatives are not acting based on our will but in their self-interest. We have to help ourselves.

In addition to the legal risks of being a bystander, have a plan to protect your data and that of fellow protesters. Consider using a burner phone and understanding what other data tracking exposure precautions you can take in case you are in a situation like Red Jacket.

Education is huge. Everyone must understand basic civics & what rights they do/not have in different circumstances. Free speech, assembly, etc. aren’t unlimited- recognize when you need a permit or a time/place/manner/content restriction being imposed could be genuine. Know your 4th, 5th, & 6th Am rights & how to invoke them. Document. Everything. Citizen journalism is essential as are quick drops before spoliation.

@inthehands I don’t want platitudes. I want action. Klobuchar disgusts me. She can’t even bring herself to say that ICE should be abolished. I want a real leader to stand up somewhere, unite the resistance, and get stuff done. This is beyond normal times and normal niceties like voting against extra funding to DHS.

I said nothing of the kind. I’ve been crocheting frog hats for PDX protests. I’m a law prof helping my students brainstorm & process.

My point is not to waste time on dead avenues & false hopes. Schumer & Jeffries aren’t answers. Congress isn’t the solution. We need a national leader - a modern John Lewis, MLK, whoever - & national strikes to do economic damage & start bringing attention to our voices.

I’m in Salem, Oregon. We went to Merkley’s town hall last week. Dodge, weave, duck. And he’s one of the few not beholden to AIPAC. He wants to talk kitchen table issues and platitudes and what will happen after the midterms. They are using chemical weapons on his constituents. They are arresting his families for seeking help at ERs. He will not discuss it. He will not be a leader. And he’s clearly not troubled in his conscience by any of it. I’ll keep calling, but…

@samiamsam @inthehands it’s already been funded via the Big Beautiful Bill. This bill has already passed the House. The Senate is just adding money to what’s already been approved. The ship has long since sailed with full blessings and champagne toasts. They are fully funded. The House approved the cherry on top already. No one is impeaching or dismantling or defunding anything. Dem donors are happy. Do you see a Dem leader emerging to talk opposition? Not happening.

@inthehands here’s the thing: ICE already is funded under the Big Beautiful Bill. The upcoming vote (already passed by the House, by the way) is for MORE funding. Killing that bill doesn’t defund ICE. It puts a small pinch on future budgets. I’m sure this government will find a workaround, if it deems the money necessary. It doesn’t seem to believe that Congress really possesses the power of the purse or that Executive Orders related to agencies operate within federal budgeting.
