@newsmast is working with @Bonfire as a backend as well for their solutions. It's great to see this implementation in progress, I had heard of it before. Curious if they are using the Community flavor.

Newsmast is working on "apps for change", which hides the intricacies of the fediverse. Ah, Newsmast is working with @qlub

They provide not only an instance, but an app to go along with it - specifically designed for the community it serves. Pretty cool.

For each community they work with - the app and instance are specifically customized for their needs.

The app is published to the app stores through the community's developer accounts. Not owned by Newsmast.

Not knowing exactly what the fediverse or open social web is - isn't a bad thing - we have a blank slate. That's a good thing.

How do we introduce normies to the fediverse?

The current fediverse culture isn't as welcoming. And there are UI issues that need to be addressed. Even small UI issues can push people away - an accidental posting of a private post to a public timeline for example.

Survey of the normal people - "What is the fediverse?". Oh boy. We've got some work to do, y'all. Tho I'd love it if we were all part of an MCU plot.

Open Social fared a bit better than this.

Oh I really connect with this title "The Loneliness Rebellion" - love that.

Users are tired of screaming into a void, not being able to reach the people and topics they are interested in with ads and attention grabbers in the way.

Users looking for meaningful connections to other real people. Willing to look outside of large socials for that, moreso every day and with every new generation. Moving to smaller, more meaningful communities.

    @saskia from @newsmast up next.

Newsmast Foundation looks to provide organizations, groups and communities an introduction and onboarding to the Open Social Web. (Among other things like channel.org)

Oh..live translations on iPhone is pretty cool. I need to learn how to use this better. Still not going to make comments and quotes until I feel more confident in how this works.

I'm not going to pretend I can understand what is being said, but let me give you a background from the official FediMTL site for this discussion:

"A reflection on the future of journalism in the age of algorithms, exploring information sovereignty, media independence, and the transformation of news platforms."

I'm gonna try this live translation thing with my apple headphones.

    The speaker is @catouma

Hey y'all stepping away for lunch (so it FediMTL) and I'll be back in about an hour.

Be sure to check out the #FediMTL hashtag and the FediWall, too.

So far, not much interest from Patreon to do this. Should we setup an alternative? Some already exist.

    https://crowdbucks.fund/

    https://comradery.co/

    https://ghost.org/

And some have come and gone, like SubClub.

Pateron offers private blogs, private RSS feeds and more. The content can be delivered both publicly and privately to specific groups of contributors.

Let's get Patreon incorporated into the fediverse!

YouTube adware is by far the largest funding offering for video content creators. But Patreon isn't far behind when you looked at Canadian Civil's audience specifically.

Comparing toaster content from PeerTube and YouTube, plus getting paid for that toaster content outside of YouTube.

So true - mainstream socials is more about connecting to brands and being entertained by those brands. Less about making true connections with people.

AI discussion going on. Julian: "No AI coding in NodeBB".

Julian lets out a big sigh, and perhaps an internal UGH with me sighing and UGHing almost in unison, lol.

It's a huge, complicated discussion, and one that the fediverse community is largely unwilling to discuss right now without a lot of screaming and finger pointing. Because, it's truly scary, especially to the tech world. Me included.

Audience member is commenting how discussion forums can be more legible and personable. With more of a relationship being created between members than you would see in a microblogging platform.

Agreed. It's the difference between a local coffee shop and standing at the corner in Time Square and trying to talk to someone.
