@mcc 它 was used for object except human for a very long time. Not like 他/她 is 会意字, 它 is a 假借字, which originally means 蛇 (snake). Simplified Chinese just treat 牠 (which has the same meaning) as 异体字 and only keep 它 (it may because it has less stroke).
