  • In case you haven't heard it lately, it's not a moral failing to be fat.

@nobrainnopain @polypunk I'm asking you to consider who you're hurting with your jokes. It ain't Trump. I'm not only speaking of weight but ability, too. I used weight as an example, but there's countless other examples of disability being used.
Ableism is pervasive in our societies, and everyday mocking of disabilities allows it to persist. It subtly implants in your mind that certain people are less than based on diverging from the ideal, which is a cis-het, able-bodied, white male in their 20s-40s, any other deviation is bad and should be considered shameful.

This exact conversation is why I haven't really been talking about this subject much lately. Most people right now are less interested in interrogating their own biases and are being reactionary. Which sucks, and it's annoying, but there's more pressing work for me lately. My hope is this would catch people with open minds and they would think about how they are contributing to oppression in their lives. That's obviously not you, enjoy your ableist jokes, I have bigger fish to fry.

@nobrainnopain @afewbugs @polypunk I don't see anyone freaking out here, friend. Perhaps you need to interrogate your own biases if this conversation is making you uncomfortable.

That's the problem and you refuse to understand. Weight and ability are not a character flaw, thus they shouldn't be being used to mock. The people you hurt the most with that sort of language are the people around you that are those things, as well. You are also behaving exactly like them, let us remember how the far right talked about Heather Heyer after she was killed by a white supremacist in Charlottesville. Whilst they were attempting to resuscitate her her belly became exposed, and the fascists made a whole meal of rhetoric around it. I remember, because I am fat. I know just how much they hate people like me. And you are partaking in that very same hate when you mock weight and ability.

Being a rapist, pedophile and a fascist definitely are character flaws. Why isn't calling them these very bad things enough?

In case you haven't heard it lately, it's not a moral failing to be fat.

Fascists support the perfect body as ideal, and during this time it is getting more and more socially dangerous to be fat. I even hear it from my own comrades. It really is bullshit how much we use body shaming, and disability to discredit our enemies. It's as if being fascists and pedophiles isn't insult enough... which says a lot about how we view disability, and fat people.

Please stop using fatness and disability as insults.
