Also, none of them have the motor skills to rollerblade. One of them constantly says "my knee hasn't been the same since the shopping cart accident" if you bring it up. Another says "I have Tourettes, I'd die if I tried."

And as aforementioned, most of them have no fashion sense. One of them is vaguely alt, tells everyone they're scene or emo or whatever, but in a "they're trying too hard" sort of way.

Another constantly talks about Tron like it's their personality. They WILL infodump about Tron if you mention it. They talk about how "the old movie was better."

Hackers if it was real:

Picture like 6 people, in hoodies and/or t-shirts, one wearing shorts in the middle of winter "because I hate the heat." Another wears a hoodie, even in the summer, because "I'm always cold."

One of them says, "yeah I put the package on NPM." Then they wait. And then they check on something. And he says, "YES OUR SUPPLY CHAIN ATTACK WORKED."

He is staring at a janky shell prompt on a machine, checking process lists, running SQL queries and dumping the data through an SSH pipe through a VPN and several hop servers.

And then he says, "should we install a cryptolocker?" and one of his friends says "nah too high risk, we can just sell this on the dark web." So they open Tor browser, log into a shady data broker marketplace, make a post, and offer it for an obscene amount of BTC.

And they either get their door kicked in because their "mixing service" was a front, or they get away with it... for now.

Real hacking is reading an RFC and being confused, sitting at a screen at 3am reading a hex dump like "what the fuck WHY did that bit flip", figuring out how you fucked up the permissions this time or what permissions you forgot to set, and "oh God why is this container crashing at 2am every day." Not the vibe from the movie. I wish it was the vibe from the movie. If Hackers had real hackers it'd be a very boring movie no one would wanna watch. I wish our UIs were that cool.

I will admit... my brain does mentally associate the movie Hackers with "I run Kali Linux therefore I am Neo" types and also script kiddies. Not exclusively but "there's a lot of overlap." Like people who treated the film as if it was scripture, but instead of being curious kids they just boot someone who pissed them off in an MMO with a script.

I liked it when I was a kid but as an adult it's like "oh my GOD this is so cringe, computers don't work this way."

It would actually probably not be a good thing if someone could literally do that.

Also as iconic as Hackers was, it does feel like if someone says the movie was an inspiration, you can tell they're over the age of 35, or they're a script kiddie. Maybe both, though not necessarily both.

@chesheer WinRAR doesn't claim it's going to "change the world." It isn't gunning for anyone's job. It has no pretensions of what it is. It isn't trying to lock you into a "cloud-based subscription model." It doesn't even make you pay for it, it just nags you gently and keeps working. It just claims it will compress and split your files and help you recover them (important back in the day with floppies!).

And that's way more earnest than anything being made today.

@chesheer Hear me out: WinRAR is weirdly beloved, often bought by people who say "this got me through my childhood of sneaking stuff out of school on floppies, thanks", isn't predatory, just guilts you gently.
