Any typos spotted in this post are so grateful for all the lovely messages from yesterday. If typos spotted, please remind them them that they've never failed to finish writing a novel no matter the obstacle. Even if they have to do it while roaring into the void, The End gets written. Eventually!

*I have no other description for how these birds move. I adore them. Just seeing them makes me so, so happy. If you're wondering what I'm talking about, here is the bird in question. (They're an introduced species but I still find them rather wonderful.) https://ebird.org/atlasnz/species/calqua

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A couple (80s?) walk out of a supermarket in a small country town, search through their trolley for a pack of fresh baked cupcakes and gleefully crack it open.
Standing in the morning sun, nibbling on little frosted morsels of happiness.

A man (20s?) is strutting down an evening-quiet street with a board game under his arm. (Carcassonne?)
There's important board game business to be done and he's ready for it.
Cicadas click clicking in trees overhead.
A nearby dog woofing a "Who goes there?"

A very pregnant woman (20s?) is wandering around Kmart while hugging a giant blue Stitch plushie.
A man (30s?) greets her asking, "Heya cuz! What ya got there?"
She laughs and holds out Stitch, saying, "Hug THIS."
He does and laughs, "Oh yeah! It's mine now!"

A man (40s?) in sensible hiking wear with a high tech pair of binoculars is standing at the edge of a river, grinning as he looks at a magnified family of California quail derp-running* chest first across a walking track.
Making little quail noises as quails do.
    (Best. Birds. Ever.)

A tourist stops at a food truck doing smash burgers and loaded fries in a small country town.
Looking at the menu she says: " YES! You have American mustard!"
The server does a big evil cackle: "AH HA! It's a tourist trap. Ya fell for it."
Laughing, she orders a burger, fries, the lot.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A man (60s?) is lugging a big plastic crate of Christmas ornaments from a shed while two small humans (3 & 4?) supervise, excitedly leading the way back into a pretty wooden bungalow.
A sleek tabby cat bringing up the rear.

A man (20s?) in baggy skater wear is crouching next to a brown miniature poodle, saying: "You're an AWESOME girl. Yes you are! YES you ARE"
Miniature Poodle is a woolly wiggle of rapturous adoration.
Fluffy tail wagging, tummy on show for pats.

Two mud covered men, sitting on muddy mountain bikes, are having a contented chat in the lee of a building as a light rain falls.
One says to the other: "Good ride, eh?"
The other laughs: "Yeah. I'm so happy I got to do it, although, I think it was more a slide than a ride!"

Three small humans (3 to 6?) are performing a VERY special play on a community stage. It involves a whole variety of singing, and some unexpected honking noises. Their audience a few curious seagulls.
Mum and Dad chilling at a nearby restaurant.
A big community Christmas tree in the background.

Three generations of the same family (Nan, Mum and Teen) are strutting down the street in their best black jeans and metal T-shirts. Nan's a fan of Pantera. Mum likes Ghost and Teen's rocking old school Metallica.
    Cheerful chatter as they go.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A tiny human (2?) runs his fastest down a garden path to greet his big brother (5?) home from school.
Big Brother stoically accepting all hero worship.
Little Brother doing a happy skip-dance of welcome as he leads the way back into the house.

A very serious man (60s?) is doing some cycling along a beach path on a no-nonsense trail bike.
    But what is this?!
A little black dog sitting on a special basket in front of the handlebars? Ears flapping in the wind and a goofy doggy grin on its face?
    Ah, maybe opposites attract.

A young human (8?) is practicing doing bunny hops on his scooter.
He doesn't quite have the hang of it and there're a few stops and starts but it's okay.
    He's having fun.
Grinning when he gets one right.

Six young humans (9?) are playing volleyball after school. Five have their game faces on, taking epic dives at the ball.
Meanwhile, one is doing a dreamy on-the-spot dance.
Yes there's a bit of fuss going on, but she's happy in her own wee world.

A big man (20s?) in business casual is lounging on his tummy on some grass in a park. Big Man's big dog (white staffy) is affectionately nuzzling his human's beard with his nose, tail wagging with helicopter-enthusiasm.
    Birdsong in trees overhead.
A city settling in for the night.

Any typos spotted in this post are Comma Hopping Ampersands. If spotted, please suggest they spend a little while hopping off the life rollercoaster and snoozing in a park.

#Spotted at a Country Festival in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A small human (4?) with tiger face paint is facing another bigger small human (5?) with spiderman face paint.
With great authority she announces: "I am a TIGER which is MUCH BETTER than SPIDERMAN. so you HAVE to do what I say!"

Numerous tiny humans and their dads are lined up to sit in a fire engine and to make the BIG HOSE go. Both tiny humans and dads showing equal levels of excitement. This is a FIRE ENGINE. You don't get cooler than that.

A small, stern young human (4?) is fiercely studying an elderly Jersey cow who is calmly accepting all pats as her due.
When Mum asks if Small Human would like to pat the cow he scowls. "That is NOT A COW! It's a dog. You pat dogs!"
Placid Jersey Cow seems unbothered by this bendy taxonomy.

A tiny human (2?) is most insistent that her Care Bear should get to cuddle some sleeping piglets.
    The only problem is... how?
Tiny Piglets are snuggled up, snoozing in their hut and she cant quite reach them through the fence.
    Hmmm.
Maybe Care Bear cuddles can happen long distance instead.

A young human (4?) is given a precious sausage wrapped in a slice of white bread, tomato sauce* on top.
This is valuable treasure and she's carefully trying to maneuver it into her sparkly unicorn handbag.
    But what is this?!
For some inexplicable reason Dad is objecting to this excellent plan.

  • #Spotted Recently at the Beach in Aotearoa New Zealand:

Any typos spotted in this post spent a delightful afternoon at the beach last weekend only to have two weka parents and their chicks try to steal a) a bucket hat, b) a jandal* and c) a piece of fish from our fish and chips. If spotted please remind them to take a picture! They keep forgetting.

*Wekas are a beloved local bird that will absolutely snaffle anything. See picture. They look innocent and quiet but they are very very very sneaky.

*The shags in this case were Chatham Islands shags as far as I could tell.

*Jandals are flip flops or thongs.

#Spotted Recently at the Beach in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A tiny human (1.5?) is toddle-running down into the surf only for the receding water to come back again!
    (Oh no!)
Shrieking she runs back up the sand again.
    But wait!
    The water's going away again?
    Hmm.
Maybe it's time to go back in...

A weka is standing guard next to a picnic table laid with an impressive spread of bread, cheese, dips and an entire sponge cake.
    Weka is quiet.
    Weka is sneaky...
    BUT WHAT IS THIS?!
A peeping weka chick comes out from under a nearby bush? And another?
Maybe not so sneaky after all...

A man (30s?) and three small humans (3-6?) are stretched out on their tummies on the sand, heads resting on their hands, eyes closed as they nap. The sun is shining, all is peaceful. Looking like three contented, happily basking seals in a row.

A group of black and white shags* are congregated at the water's edge, looking like bendy penguins with their sturdy bodies and long necks as they waddle in unison too and fro with the flow of the tide.

A woman (20s?) is sitting with her tiny human (1?) in her lap, carefully making drawings in the sand with a small stick. Mum is carefully drawing flowers, and Tiny Human is very helpfully SWOOSHING her feet over the sand to artfully scuff them afterwards.
    Collaboration at its most adorable.
