Going through a 1910 railway atlas of Europe available online in Polona (the Polish National Library's online digitized collection)… I don't think I've felt quite so viscerally the depths to which Russia held back the development of railways here before

Another nice thing about the atlas (which is tagged as Public Domain by the way, you can check it out here: https://polona.pl/preview/8c90adba-7f04-45e9-b923-f79ab2d6452d), is the wealth of ship connections depicted, each line lovingly marked with the nationality of the company running it. Marseille-Yokohama in 38 days, anyone?
