@violetmadder @cwebber lots of great information but the tone reminds me of people who focus on policy saying "it's deadly dangerous to ride a bike here, no one in their right mind would do it"
When you assume democracy is real and your audience has some sort of sway over how it operates, maybe some of them work for big companies and have the ear of lobbyists, or maybe you just think that writing your representatives and signing petitions works… then saying "if we don't all come together to keep this from happening then we're all screwed forever" makes some sense.
When I read it I think "Wow this could totally change what digital privacy and security looks like. Maybe people will start using older hardware that performs worse but isn't as locked down. Maybe more stuff will move offline. Huh." but I don't get scared and have that panicky sense of urgency because I'm not fooling myself into thinking that I can stop it.
