I am all for that type of learning and addressing gatekeeping. Personally I have found many people in tech quite resistant to learning public sector frameworks for addressing the impacts of tech, equity issues, etc. On the learning side, little of this is secret. It does take some open mindedness and time to learn.
We’re agreed on breaking down gatekeeping to insiders. Just, it’s not always pure cronyism.
Interesting point. To some extent “knowing how to get grants” represents knowing how to write a plan to address societal issues like labor conditions, ethics, and impact. In the entrepreneurial ecosystem of the US, what got rewarded was growth hacking. How to strike a balance?

I can see how someone running an account that is especially attractive to trolls, especially an account that gets a lot of visibility and follow requests, might find this necessary.
Keep in mind following an account isn’t just about reading the posts, but also can include followers only posts and DMs open to followers only.
The company’s head of HR should be livid. If they aren’t, whoever they report to should be livid. Your wife, I assume, is unlikely to become violent. But (and I realize it often doesn’t seem this way) handling separations well is important for workplace safety. Your wife is undoubtedly processing a lot of emotions and may not want to get into it, and unfortunately I don’t see an angle where she gets much more than an apology. But that IT person should face consequences.
