The automation platform I spend most of my time in let's me use in-line Python, jq, and JSONPath. They have little AI boxes so it can do it for you. I refuse to use them and quite enjoy writing my own, reading stackoverflow, reading documentation, and doing iterative testing.

I used to hate jq and found it unintuitive. Now it's one of my favorite things to hack around in and I get really excited when I find a novel solution that lets me replace ten steps and two loops with one carefully crafted command.

And I'm finally taking a Python class after a decade of always meaning to.

I want to know why and how the things I put name on actually work.

Yes.

I started by joining a thriving instance and watching the Local and Federated feeds.

Then I started following hashtags.

Then I found people posting things I liked and started following people.

It took time, months, but I have a very active feed and about two dozen Lists for when I just want to see a certain type of Toot.

Things I miss:

• The artists I followed on Instagram. I'm now supporting two of them via Patreon or Liberapay because they also post here.
• The onslaught of dank memes.

If you have error checking and loops or retries, it might. If future steps verify what comes out of previous steps, it might.

My point is that you can have a redundant overall process with efficiency in the individual pieces and that just focusing on overall efficiency in general doesn't make sense.

But that assumes you get to design the whole system and understand all the inputs, outputs, and failure modes. And whatever passes for a threat model, fault tolerance, and risk appetite. Or possibly regulatory requirements or contractual obligations. Or how much time you have to build it.

Anybody who says "we only focus on efficiency" is vastly oversimplifying.

Why not make each individual step as efficient as possible and then gather them together in a redundant system?

Inertia and uncertainty?

They are used to what they're currently doing and there's not enough public knowledge about Fediverse and Mastodon so they don't have an informed opinion.

I often tell people what I found on Mastodon and share articles and suggest that they join. They never do. All it took to get me on Mastodon was musk buying Twitter.

I've got friends who are far more progressive and leftist than me who are still using Facebook and Instagram. I get it. I gave up access to multiple artists whose work I enjoyed because I left Instagram. I have no idea what's happening with much of my extended family because I left Facebook. Some people are not willing to give it up.
