    This is deeply upsetting https://mastodon.social/@lambdageek/116099461735423343

Another upsetting thing: Apparently systemd has its own mdns setup: https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comments/1mnvzln/the_debian_technical_committee_made_a_baffling/ which Debian may, or may not, have disabled intentionally in Debian 13 (the file this poster claims is present is not present) because they expect they use Avahi instead. I don't understand why I'd use Avahi instead of systemd, or, if I decided systemd's mdns were better, how I'd switch to it.

@ireneista @xgranade yes but to my mind that's not a clear enough ask to file an issue, at least not when I have the ability to read the spec and come up with a better suggestion.

@fcbsd Who controls the contents of /etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf? The Debian installer, or me? I sincerely do not know the answer to this question

  • Question.
    mcc@mastodon.socialundefined mcc@mastodon.social

    - vi /etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf
    - there is a line right there, under [publish], saying publish-workstation=no
    - change it to yes
    - sudo systemctl restart avahi-daemon.service
    - it works now

This all makes sense but??? Why???? Was it working??? Two months ago ?!?!?!?

Oh, additionally, although ping is able to "ping laptop", if I open a local web server at port 8000 and then connect to "http://laptop:8000" in firefox, it does not connect. This was something that previously worked, when laptop.local was working.

    Question.

    - I use Debian 13 Linux.
    - mDNS is an absolutely critical part of several things I do.
    - Say on this network I have a Windows machine named "desktop" and a Linux machine named "laptop".
    - On Linux, I type "ping desktop.local". Success. I "ping laptop.local". Failure. I "ping laptop". Success.
    - Two months ago I am certain laptop.local resolved on the laptop.
    - I *think* my mdns is provided by avahi, or at least apt-cache policy says avahi-daemon is installed.

    How do I proceed?

@rk Can you help me figure out, in the current living standard, what the browsers would point to to guide their decisionmaking on what happens if they see an html attribute which has the same name as a standard-defined attribute but with a different case? https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/dom.html#attributes

@rk Well, unfortunately, I'm not using Elm.

@xgranade I think I might be able to make a claim that Yew is doing something so wrong here I can file an issue but I'm going to have to think carefully about what.

However, Yew, the Rust "React"/"Elm"-like library, in its html!{} macro,

    - Treats onsubmit and onSubmit as two different things,

    - But also recognizes it doesn't know of an html attribute named "onSubmit",

    - And also Yew simply *allows* non-specification HTML attributes, rather than rejecting them as React/Preact JSX do,

    - However, because unknown HTML attributes default to being strings, it will expect your input to be a string, and you will get a *baffling* error message.

    Micro-horror of this moment:

    - In the HTML/DOM event model, events have names like "click" or "submit"; you attach an event handler to a tag by saying "onclick" or "onsubmit".

    - Apparently, for thirty years, I've been writing this wrong, like "onClick" or "onSubmit". Web Browsers just sorta roll with this and convert to lowercase. React/Preact JSX do the same conversion and do not flag an error, they pass it through and then the browser accepts it.

What I'm listening to today: "Gold", Lamb (Autechre remix)

Æ used to do a lot more remixes and had this *fascinating* tendency to find a real particular vibe that resembled neither the source material nor Autechre's regular work but felt consistent with Autechre's other remixes. I really love the flip here about halfway through where the instrumentation suddenly pulls back and it's like an airplane bursting out of clouds or a train pulling out of a tunnel into the open

Okay. I believe in their ability to make a robot that can fly at a person's face and makes them scream

What I listened to today: "HEEL CENA", Westside Gunn

One more from the ringleader of the Buffalo, NY "Griselda" rap clique. The last one I linked was kinda surreal avant-garde but this is good solid hip hop basics. Fantastic flow and vivid production that feels like it's picking up what trip-hop set down. He has raps about how his kids like Minecraft.

Linking the Bandcamp version which has the bowlderized no-blood cover art. Last time Bluesky actually censored the link
