Another way to think of the Framework fiasco, perhaps:'nI'm not naive.@xgranade The last time I got a laptop I wanted a framework, but it was twice as much as the equivalent Lenovo or more… a Framework was aspirational. It was something I was expecting to pay extra for. To have a business, Framework needs to make me think they're not just good but SO good I'll pay extra to get whatever it is they're selling.

Poll: If you were abruptly called on to operate a sailboat, do you believe you would be able to do it?Poll: Which of the following pieces of computer software do you feel confident you could write, if you had to do it yourself?
(Assume a reasonable amount of time and access to reasonable educational resources to use for reference while doing the writing. Assume you have access to no form of "generative AI". Assume the scope of which features are supported by the OS or compiler is one of the things you're supposed to be able to decide on yourself to complete the task.)

Poll: If you were abruptly called on to operate a sailboat, do you believe you would be able to do it?Poll: Imagine you were suddenly thrust into a situation where you were the only person available to deliver a baby. How screwed are you/the mother/the baby?
(Assume six minutes to prepare, and access to a first aid kit as well as the objects, like bedsheets and cookwear, you'd find in a typical suburban home.)

A thing I do not like is when a computer form has a drop-down menu of every country in the world, and you select it and type "CAN", and it selects Namibia because Namibia begins with NA thing I do not like is when a computer form has a drop-down menu of every country in the world, and you select it and type "CAN", and it selects Namibia because Namibia begins with N

So, after the seeming hostile takeover of RubyGems, I this week saw this announcement:'nhttps://gem.coop/'nOf a reboot of RubyGems by its own former maintainers, governance structure to be announced tomorrow.@listrophy What, exactly, is the relationship between RubyCentral and DHH? If anything? People often talk about them together, and I can see how DHH fits into the spat between RubyCentral and the community, but I do not find any actual formal relationship between the two.

So, after the seeming hostile takeover of RubyGems, I this week saw this announcement:'nhttps://gem.coop/'nOf a reboot of RubyGems by its own former maintainers, governance structure to be announced tomorrow.RubyCentral do seem to have, in their coup, successfully claimed the "instutitions" of Ruby in the sense of domain names and github repos. But the community, and (a lot?) (most of?) the authors of the source in those github repos do not seem to be on board:
https://andre.arko.net/2025/09/25/bundler-belongs-to-the-ruby-community/
So this seems like a really key test case, whether open source is made of living communities or just an opaque content pipeline for corporate actors to plug their build systems into
