Actually I'm pretty sure 简 already means simplified, so I selected simplified at the top level, and this second menu is asking… I don't know. Locale? TTS dialect?!

Okay I now believe the problem is neither Tusky nor Lenovo but rather that Android is not a serious product and never has been. It seems Android may outright refuse to show scripts unless you've whitelisted the language. Problem: I think this menu is asking me which version of Chinese I want but the menu is in Chinese. I want to look at Chinese text so I can learn Chinese. I don't know it yet. I feel like I'm playing an adventure game.

    * I may explore a PR later anyway.

In Pleco they look like this. I don't know if this is a different but regular hanzi font or if the CJK unification is messing me up somehow

EDIT: I currently think Tusky is showing me Japanese character variants https://social.mildlyfunctional.gay/@artemist/116146010272716935

What I listened to today: 2024-05-22 Mastodon post, Autechre

Sean Booth of Æ has a Fediverse account and one day last year posted this gorgeous outtake from Oversteps (which I still consider Æ's most risk-taking album). It's kind of breathtaking, utterly unlike Æ, a labyrinth of classical spanish guitar, while also quintessentially Æ and very "yeah that, that's an Oversteps track". I think of this as a cousin to known(1) but I feel shadows of other songs of that era too

  • Okay so language question.

@Video_Game_King @faraiwe confession a big part of the reason i switched tracks from japanese to chinese was i was unable to get my brain good at distinguishing/vocalizing the shortvowel/longvowel distinction. Yes I realize Chinese phonetics are nightmares in at least two OTHER ways but I'm navigating those better somehow

(Also once I get good with Chinese I can return to Japanese with an instant, oddly large, but also vaguely inaccurate, kanji vocabulary)

@sibaku Yeah it's an odd sentence because it's *actually got english in it* so it wouldn't be super weird if she was trying to say bang an american way?

I have been learning Mandarin lately and it's interesting because it has ng but my tutor *insists* it is not a consonant, it is a vowel (ie "-a", "-an", and "-ang" are three different vowel sounds and the terminal "ng" is an artifact of pinyin transliteration)

@stilescrisis @Video_Game_King So things I was thinking of:

    - "Anata ga target. [Pan/Bang]!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Bc14DujCOs

    - The bit at about 0:52 (note the characters making fingerguns as they say it) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbN_coeNJZk&t=50s

I think actually in the first one she *is* saying "Bang" but with a very soft G, and in the second one they are specifically saying "Pan".

Okay so language question. When Japanese speakers onomatopoeize "Bang", it sounds to me like they are saying "Pan". Are they saying "Pan" or "Ban", or are they saying "Bang" and it just sounds to me like "Pan" due to my limited familiarity with Japanese phonetics?

What I'm listening to today: "Up Up", Li Yilei

Li Yilei is a really interesting electronic artist from Shanghai, currently operating out of London; this is from their first release "Unabled Form". Slowly building ambient/cinematic object that is either menacing like an abandoned factory or comforting like a cold winter day, depending on your inclinations. Yilei excels at this sort of data sculpture, a space made of noises that presents a narrative as you move through it

@Kiloku refers to a pixel within a texture. To avoid confusion since they can get stretched across a lot of pixels during display. Also technically they might sometimes not look like much like pixels (cf foveated rendering)
