Today in Labor History January 26. 1682: Benjamin Lay was born in England. Lay emigrated to the Provine of Pennsylvania, in British North America, where he became a radical Quaker activist against slavery, and for the rights of women and animals. He was a prolific writer on abolition and his “All Slave-Keepers that Keep the Innocent in Bondage” was one of the first abolitionist works published in the 13 Colonies. In an act of protest, he once stood outside a Quaker meeting in the middle of winter, barefoot, and without any coat. When passersby expressed concern for his health, he asked why they were not concerned for the health of the slaves, who were forced to work in the snow dressed as he was. He also once kidnapped the child of slaveholders temporarily to demonstrate to them how it felt when one’s relatives were stolen and sold. In another act of protest, this time in front of his Quaker brethren, he quoted the Bible saying that all men should be equal under God, and then plunged a sword into a Bible containing a bladder of blood-red pokeberry juice, which spattered over those nearby. He refused to consume any products made from slave labor. He was a vegetarian. He was roughly four feet tall, with a hunchback. He referred to himself as “Little Benjamin.” During the 2012 Occupy Movement, the Occupy encampment in Jenkintown, PA, where Lay was buried, activists renamed the town square as “Benjamin Lay Plaza.”

Billionaires emit a million times more greenhouse gases than the average person.

2022 OxFam study found that wealthiest individuals’ investments account for up to 70% of their emissions, producing an average of 3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per person, per year. This is a million times higher than the average 2.76 tons of CO2 for those living in the bottom 90%.

Today in Labor History November 27, 1898: Maria Vetulani was born. She was a soldier in Poland’s war for independence, the Polish-Ukrainian war, and in World War II, as well as a fierce opponent of fascism. In 1918, she fought in the defense of Lvov against the Ukrainian occupation. She had to disguise herself as a man, because women weren’t allowed in combat then. In the 1920s, she became a socialist and married the communist Bohdan de Nisau, who was later imprisoned, tortured and murdered under Stalin. She fled the USSR and moved to Warsaw, where she helped hide Jews from the Nazis. In 1944 she participated in the Warsaw Uprising, where she was wounded. The Nazis killed her in her hospital bed. Her son also participated in the uprising and survived.

Today in Labor History September 28, 2000: An uprising, known as the Second Intifada, began after the Camp David summit failed and Ariel Sharon, the butcher of Lebanon, visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Thousands of Palestinians were killed by Israeli soldiers during this Intifada. Just over 1,000 Israelis died. A tribunal held Sharon personally responsible for the 1982 Sabra and Shatila Massacre, in Beirut, during the Lebanon War, in which 3,500 Palestinian civilian refugees were slaughtered by Phalangist forces, as Israeli soldiers looked on.

  • War with Venezuela looks imminent.
    mikedunnauthor@kolektiva.socialundefined mikedunnauthor@kolektiva.social

War with Venezuela looks imminent. But the case Trump makes for it is a whole lot shakier than other recent US wars of aggression.

So, is it really about trying to gain the legal justification for mass deportations under the 1798 Aliens and Sedition Acts?

And a power play against China, which is now South America's largest trading partner, and US oligarchs' largest competitor?

Gangsterism in the service of Capital.
