It wasn't that many generations ago that people living in remote places wouldn't even see people for months, or military deployments would be assumed to be years, where contact via phone happened rarely due to cost and rarity, mail was the norm with a postcard or holiday card being the only contact with family.
Are people lonely beyond their comfort level? Sure. But our tolerance to any alone time has also decreased massively.
