Well I guess it's more like the logical extreme of that, because harsh crimes still have minimum sentences.

Like imagine accidentally committing fraud. You're tricked into trying to cash a check for thousands. Do you want months in jail for that?

Friend on Twitter is contemplating the idea of setting criminal punishment severity based on how likely you are to be a repeat offender.
Light punishment for crimes committed under extreme duress, harsh ones when the criminal would otherwise have no problem doing it again.

Yeah I'm sure this alone would be problematic, but it's an interesting idea.

Honestly this was inspired by me reading about a character in HGTTG that's described as "a magician seen walking on a beach... but nobody needed him".

Absent any context at all, this feels like a brief scene that actually does exist without context, hence the idea that something can happen out of nowhere and be forgotten by nearly everyone.
Where did he come from? Why was he there? No reason. He just was, then he wasn't. As if the universe itself forgot about him.

Five seconds.
It all happened in the span of five seconds.
Nobody saw it coming, hardly anybody will remember it.
It wasn't much... a hiccup of reality.
But, those who do remember it get to decide for themselves how much it meant to them.
