    Man bites dog, India style:

A one-year-old boy in Bihar's Bettiah village bit a cobra to death after the snake reportedly coiled around his hand while he was playing near his home. The child, identified as Govinda, fell unconscious shortly after and was rushed to the hospital.

Locals said the cobra had slithered too close, possibly agitating the infant. In what they described as a reflexive act, the child sank his teeth into the snake, killing it instantly.

Some news of a Florida cat who keeps bringing his special human cool gifts:

A scientist's cat shot to fame last year for his role in the discovery of the United States' first-known jeilongvirus. Now, the feline has replicated his success by fetching yet another animal containing a never-before-seen bug.

The newfound virus was found in a dead Everglades short-tailed shrew (Blarina peninsulae), which Pepper the cat brought home following a successful hunting trip near his home in Gainesville, Florida. John Lednicky, Pepper's owner and a virologist at the University of Florida, retrieved his pet's catch and took it to the lab for testing.

The results revealed that the shrew carried a never-before-seen strain of Orthoreovirus — a poorly understood viral genus that's known to infect birds and various mammals, including humans, white-tailed deer and bats. Lednicky and his colleagues published their findings June 10 in the journal Microbiology Resource Announcements.

  • Meanwhile, at the Royal Society ...The Royal Society is reconsidering whether to revoke Elon Musk’s fellowship after the billionaire made an inflammatory speech at an anti-immigration rally in London

Meanwhile, at the Royal Society ...

The Royal Society is reconsidering whether to revoke Elon Musk’s fellowship after the billionaire made an inflammatory speech at an anti-immigration rally in London.

On 14 September, Musk spoke at the rally initiated by far-right campaigner Tommy Robinson, dialling in on video to tell thousands of attendees that “violence is coming to you” and “you either fight back or you die”.

Having previously resisted calls to kick Musk out of the Royal Society, its president Adrian Smith has now written to fellows to say its governing council will discuss the matter at a meeting on 1 October.

In the letter, seen by Research Professional News, Smith says he was sure many fellows “will share my concern at the events of the last week and the growing tendency to resort to the language of violence in pursuit of political programmes that are founded upon narratives of division and simplistic stereotypes of political opponents—including, unfortunately, an address to the recent London rally from a fellow of the Royal Society”.

Smith adds that, in his lifetime, core values of “tolerance, courtesy, respect for others, and freedom of speech” have been taken for granted. “It is no accident that human understanding and science have also flourished to an extraordinary extent in this period. Threats to these values are now real.”

  • “There is a big push to appease people complaining about homelessness by putting them in jail,” says a Tucson community organizer

“There is a big push to appease people complaining about homelessness by putting them in jail,” says a Tucson community organizer.

Why, yes, while unorthodox, putting people who complain about homelessness into jail until they reconsider, signalling succssful appeasement, definitely seems like an idea that should be loudly discussed, especially within the earshot of people who like to advocate jailing people for homelessness.
