These are exciting because the bit is trapped in the material so it doesn't have any room for errors.

    smellsofbikes@mastodon.socialundefined smellsofbikes@mastodon.social

@meganL curtains have a mechanism for retracting them. Drapes just hang and if you want to move them, you have a hook on the side that you manually pull them to.

Mini project: rounded t-slots cut in walnut. This is for hanging oil paint tubes. I wrote u shaped tool paths and learned a lot about minimizing tear out on the climb side, by cutting half the tool depth into the wood, and then offsetting to do a conventional cut that comes out into the area I already cut. Steel is so much easier.

There's a coyote on the couch in the backyard. I got this pic from inside when it had just settled down. Now it's sound asleep. I guess this answers why there have been so many little animal bits in the back yard lately. I vote for this because neighbors are having rat problems.

Tonight I learned a bunch more about work offsets in LinuxCNC. But: I have a power strip with individual switches for outlets so I can power off the motion control hardware so it doesn't overheat, and the individual switches each had two tiny screws in tension into two tiny plastic standoffs, and one broke. I could 3d print a support bracket but I could also use a coping saw and some pine to build a compression support for the switch.
    Stupid side quests.

@dillyd my dog is named Suzy Rockets because on her first day home she farted and it scared her and she leapt off the couch leaving a foul exhaust, and barking in fear.

Things I just now learned: garter snakes have mildly neurotoxic venom, AND ALSO can ingest many toxic amphibians and reptiles and accumulate their toxins in the garter snake's organs, thus making garter snakes both venomous and poisonous.
(All of this was only discovered in the last 20 years.)

  • Yesterday I was herding snakes.
    smellsofbikes@mastodon.socialundefined smellsofbikes@mastodon.social

Yesterday I was herding snakes. There were multiple dead small snakes and three still alive ones in the roadways on my lunch bike ride. Two were the eastern black neck garters I'm used to, tiny and docile. I didn't recognize this one, but @MLE_online identified it as a terrestrial garter. They're the only ones in this area that constrict prey, and the only that are sufficiently venomous to cause local irritation and discomfort if they bite.

After anodizing it goes in the dye. I'm using somewhat dilute RIT at 80C.

New adventure: anodizing aluminum. I'm using some Zep product for etching because it says it is all lye. That's a filthy lye: it leaves blue junk on the aluminum. Don't use this. @MLE_online told me to get Red Devil and I wish I had. I'm using sparex #2 (NaHSO4) for sulfation, 25V for 30 min, aluminum cathode, anode, clamp. Pic of it sulfating and right out of the bath.
