@futurebird Example: I have a fairly accurate electricity consumption monitor (uses a current clamp) that will keep going for about 5 months on a pair of rechargeable AAAs. The one from my electricity company manages about 12 hours.

#Smartphones should be:@futurebird Agree totally, especially the e-ink! Everything these days has a huge backlight to drain the battery. Sometimes reducing the battery life from a few months or more to less than a day.

#Smartphones should be:@futurebird Thicker, so there's room for a battery that (i) holds a sensible amount of charge, (ii) doesn't need overcharging to do so, and (iii) isn't quickly worn out by over-frequent charge cycles.
Also: entirely under the control of the owner (ie the user).
