That is, after all, how for-profit exploitation works.

Berners-Lee essentially stood by and watched, if not abetted, the hostile corporate takeover of the protocol and Commission that he conceived. In recent years he's become concerned about the effect of that on his legacy. Should have thought about that much earlier, Tim. He wasn't clueless, as this demonstrates, but he certainly didn't try hard enough to prevent that outcome. Genie's out of the bottle now and has a taste for the good life, it ain't goin' back in now.

To be clear, the corporate harm done to the Web goes FAR beyond advertising. The corporate demands for revisions to HTML and the addition of new technologies (e.g. JavaScript) to enable unfettered exploitation of everyone who uses the Web have caused irreparable harm. Berners-Lee SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE to to put a full stop to this *cough* progress. He wasn't. He utterly failed as a technological shepherd.
