    > Batel's Gorn DNA infusion, the treatment from the chimera plant, and her earlier encounter with the Vezda are stirred up into a convoluted sci-fi stew to explain all this in a dialogue scene that tries with all its might to use sci-fi-y terminology to convince us this actually makes sense, but mostly just draws attention to what a whopper of an ass-pull it all really is. The overriding sense one gets while watching this is, "Well, they're just making stuff up now and pretending it holds water." It really doesn't. But I have to admit that I respect the commitment to the sheer insanity of the concept, even if the effort and seam-hiding are lacking. In the end, it's basically, "because we said so." god bless Jammer. https://www.jammersreviews.com/st-snw/s3/new-life-new-civilizations.php

    > None of this "Universal Star-child" bullshit. Bang on. It's the same reason I couldn't stand Discovery. There's a universe ending problem and you alone are the key to solving it? Blech. Fan fic with higher production values. I think Batel was a well written character, otherwise.

  • Yeah, the whole wrap up of Batel's storyline was pretty stupid, NGL.

I don't understand why they didn't just go with the moral dilemma of having to choose between her life or the possibly dozens of baby Gorn that were growing inside her.

I mean, if you want to have a heart-wrenching example of how far Star Fleet is willing to go, in the name of peace and the preservation of innocent lives...leaving Batel to choose whether or not to sacrifice herself, in exchange for them...as well as the prospect of continued peace between the Federation and the Gorn? Wow. Now, that would have been a powerful display of compassion and benevolence.

None of this "Universal Star-child" bullshit. Just a good old fashioned moral dilemma, about the needs of the many, outweighing the needs of the few.

  • I also really like Season 3, but I do feel it is the weakest of the 3 seasons we got so far.

  • This is the problem with modern TV shows. We only have 10 episode seasons now vs the 20+ long ones from the TNG era. If these were all episodes in a season that lasted 20 episodes I doubt we would be seeing as many complaints, but as it is 10 episodes does not leave much room for any change of pace mid season. This season, while in my opinion was quite well written, was a little all over the place and didn't really seem to have a lot of direction. It really bounced around a lot, which wouldn't be a problem as much if there was 20 episodes to work with, but when you only have 10 its hard to justify some of the "fun" or experimental episodes.

As an aside. My least favourite episode "This is Starfleet" was also my favourite story in the season and if it was shot as a normal episode I think would have probably be my favourite of the series so far. It really captured the "Classic Trek" vibe for me.

  • Agreed. Unless we're counting Risa/ tenforward. Then it's second best.

  • By a wide margin too.

  • Yeah beats me. It's still the best trek since the aughts.
