@fluttersh @MinistryOfGoodIdeas No, the main focus of the project is security and privacy while still being able to use Android apps like normal. There are other projects that don't focus on security, like LineageOS, but they don't offer optional confined Google Play services, only microG, a reverse-engineered implementation of Google Play services. So what you're asking here for is either a GrapheneOS fork with all security measures stripped, a LineageOS fork with optional Google Play services and Protect API and other features like storage scope implementation, or a complete new project based on AOSP that has this functionality. If you root your device, a lot of safety checks will fail, and therefore a lot of apps and functions will just not work. Therefore, I think no one will make an effort to get less app functionality and security. Less security means more attack surface to get your data leaked, which means you're also less private.

@mathieui@piaille.fr Thanks for engaging with this. I appreciate the pushback, and I think some of your concerns are worth taking seriously. That said, I want to clarify something about my position: TGPL (or any specific licensing mechanism) is just one possible avenue among many. The broader argument isn't tied to any single instrument. Regulatory pressure on governments to mandate that models trained on public data be returned to the public, expanded public funding for open research infrastructure, international treaty reform—these are all on the table. The point is strategic pluralism, not a bet on one tool. On the copyright concern: yes, major players have shown contempt for copyright. But that's precisely why I think purely technical or market-based solutions are insufficient, and why political and legislative pressure matters. The history of generic medicine access is instructive here—no single mechanism won that fight, but the combination of compulsory licensing advocacy, treaty pressure, and public funding reform produced real change over time. Now, your Luddite parallel: I actually think it argues for my position rather than against it. You're right that the weavers never reclaimed the technology. But the lesson I draw from that isn't “therefore reclamation is impossible.” It's that refusing or destroying the means of production doesn't work. What eventually produced change was organized labor movements that took the existence of that technology as a given and fought over who controls it and under what conditions. That's exactly the kind of struggle I'm advocating for here. The real question you're raising, I think, is about the subject: is there an organized political force capable of carrying this through? That's a fair and hard question. But it's an argument for building that force, not for abandoning the goal.

@ohir I do fear you are right.Right now it's quite some muddy waters, where several forks appearing. And some have even disappeared. These muddy waters need to calm down at some point. For a fork to be sustainable, it need to have enough contributors and users. Contributors need to cover development, needed infrastructure, support and (what you mention) finances to keep things rolling.I don't think it's sustainable that we have so many forks appearing these days. The strongest ones of them should unite and setup a non-profit organisation, which others could join as well. Perhaps using a similar model as Codeberg. With such a joint effort, the marketing towards end users can be much more uniform and targetted, which would be easier for users to relate to. Just as Firefox managed to take over the position of Netscape (even though Firefox was spun out of Netscape, so not directly comparable).I would truly encourage @librewolf, @zenbrowser, @Waterfox, @konform and other forks to get together and look at the possibilities to collaborate on a broader scale. I don't say they should abandon their own "uniqueness", but that they can find a way to help contribute to a more healthy and sustainable environment for important forks to actually survive and be sustainable. Have something "shared" at the core across all forks, where they can build their own uniqueness from. Have a shared vision and mission statement, have a united front for a privacy respecting browser family.

@dazo First, please don't get me wrong: Like anyone else, I don't want my data to be sold, and at the very last by the browser I've been using as my daily driver for anything internet for years. But the question I can't find a viable answer for is: How can Firefox become a sustainable organization?Selling our data is a no-go, that's for sure. But how do they make the money required to not only maintain but also invest in Firefox?
