The problem of cross-community posting

  • What if upon cross-posting the default is separation, but a request is sent to the original community to request a comment tree merge?

Then you don't have to share comment space with the tankies unless you wish it

  • Piefed splits up the comment boxes based on community when a thread is crossposted, so you can still distinguish between the comment boxes on different communities despite them being visible.

That said, a potential future option here would be a community opt-out of crosspost functionality in this way

  • From what I recall, I believe that Reddit handles crossposts in a similar manner, that is, comments in one crosspost in one subreddit don't show in other crossposted subreddits.

Like Blaze mentioned in another comment, one of the problems with putting all the comments together is that different communities have different rules, so a comment that would be fine in one community might get you in trouble in a different community. People already get confused by this as it is. If all the comments from different crossposts get aggregated in one place, I think it would cause complete confusion and more work for mods.

  • It's not that cluttered. Have you looked at how it looks on piefed?

  • I'm thinking more about less clutter while reading

  • You can already do that in Lemmy and piefed - crossposts are listed at the top

  • They are separated because communities have different rules and different moderation teams.

I know as a user that the same comment on instance A and instance B would be perceived differently. I also know that if I report a comment, it will be reviewed by different mod teams.

As a mod, having a clear view of what comments have been made in my community and which ones have not also helps.

  • Are the posts and communities so strictly structured that a post cannot be a part of multiple communities?

That's my understanding. If I understand correctly, a post belongs to a single community, but two posts referring to the same URL will be identified as such by Piefed, which is how the crossposts community consolidation happens.

In NodeBB categories and topics are all distinct elements, and the fact that a topic belongs in a category is contrived. A topic could be part of a user (pinned topics anyone?), a group (group only conversations?), or in this case… multiple categories.

Interesting, there's definitely discussions to have about how to map that with the Piefed/Lemmy structure

What's new Media library that lets you upload images to comments/post body and paste from the clipboard Animated gif support for user profile pictures Specify alt-text for link posts that link to an image Emoji picker and spoiler button added to markdown toolbar More links to the modlog (footer, community sidebar, user profile) and improved searching/filtering Leave a conversation to remove it from the list of their direct message conversations Post urls are now "friendly" since they include the community name and a snippet of the title instead of just a number Add link to show parent comment when directly viewing a comment reply Image markdown style formatting to allow more advanced control of how images are rendered. e.g. ![image alt text :: width=300px](https://url to image) Code syntax highlighting in code blocks and allow for style selection in user settings Tag cloud added to sidebar for feeds and topics Better searching and filtering of the Instances list Add a block (of a user, community, instance or domain) from the blocks and filters management area, without doing it via a post Popup suggestions when mentioning a community or user as you type Onboarding plugin which auto-subscribes, auto-blocks and sends a welcome message for new accounts Improved federation efficiency Old posts can be automatically archived (saved to S3) to free up database space Old posts by bots with no comments are automatically deleted LLDAP support, which does LDAP a bit differently To upgrade To upgrade from 1.2.x: git pull git checkout v1.3.x ./deploy.sh or ./deploy-docker.sh In the past we had a separate project for realtime notifications, which is now unsupported as it's code has been merged with the main PieFed project. To set it up, refer to the Push Notifications section of install.md. As well as enhancing the user experience doing this will decrease load on your server if it hosts local communities with many subscribers as some of the federation work has been offloaded to the push notifications service. ⚠️ Do not be HACKED !! 😱Software updates include not only new features but also critical security fixes. To keep your site secure and stable, ensure you always use the latest version. We frequently observe numerous sites across the Fediverse running very outdated versions of Mastodon or Misskey. Some sites are even using versions over a year old.Be the smart administrator and keep your site up to date.#Mastodon #Misskey #Fediverse #ActivityPub #PixelFed #PeerTube #InfoSec #Security

    I have a confession. I installed my Mastodon server software on my VPS that is marketed as a "storage" VPS. 😎 How awesome is that? 😎 It has a 1TB SSD anyway and 18GB of RAM, so why not increase the RAM usage? 😎 #mastodon #fediverse #selfhosting #vps #storageserver #tech #geek #itstudent #humane_tech #decentralisation #openweb #technology #sysadmin #bigstorage #ram #ssd #doityourself #coding #linux #serverlife #webhosting #diytech #compute #network #activitypub #awesome #engineering
