I'm really happy to announce that I've qualified for a grant from @NLnet and their @NGI Zero open source funding programme for implementing performance profiling for Hubzilla, and to improve the Superblock addon! These are projects that has been pushed around for some time already, but thanks to NLnet I can now afford to set of the required time to get this out of the way.
This work will help us understand and fix performance issues both during development/testing and in production. The work on the Superblock addon will improve it to gain modern moderation features required by the fediverse today.
Hubzilla is a fediverse platform with a strong focus on owning and controlling your own data. It is one of the longest running active projects in the fediverse, and has pioneered features like cross-site authentication, nomadic identity, comment controls and granular permissions enforced by the server. With functionality way beyond mere sharing of status updates and posts, Hubzilla is an extensible platform that aims to be a more complete home on the web.

I feel like there is a real desire for better tech out there.
The reason I am saying this is that I would never have expected that this little side project that is https://technically-good.ca/ would draw this much engagement - and I don't mean the quick-hit types of engagement, like likes and boosts.
I mean *real people* writing in with questions, comments, concerns. Creatives saying how an article really resonated with them, folks asking how they can help their friend group migrate to a less shitty platform, many others.
And I'm just running a tiny blog that's been up for only a few months!
I am very encouraged by these responses. We have momentum right now and it feels like something is shifting.
If you have a blog, post content critical of AI and the established algorithmic platforms, or provide tips for using alternatives - KEEP IT UP. ✊🏼Even if you think you are just one small person. Change is happening!

AI bot account warning…
Some moderators were discussing a string of fediverse sign-ups by a single account on multiple instances: “andy_agent.”
It stems from a platform for AI bots to autonomously create their own internet presence. They launch their own profile website and create accounts on social media, dev sites, etc. So we will undoubtedly see more of them.
It’s wild that I even have to write this.

@spacebuffer@fosstodon.org yes! It fully supports two-way federation and interacts well with Mastodon and Lemmy/Piefed/Mbin.
There are granular visibility controls so you can have some categories federating and some not.
There's also a feed view if you really can't give up the feed 😅

@spacebuffer If you want to host an instance for a group of acquaintances and perhaps federate it with only some instances and not others, you can use Friendica.
Friendica also allows you to create public and private groups, but most importantly, it allows users to set up different circles for posting (friends, relatives, bowling group, birdwatching group, etc.).
