More about how moderation will work on #FediHood.

FediHood is a way to talk with people near you without telling anyone who you are or where exactly you live. It uses the #Fediverse with the #Mastodon API for common endpoints, so it already works with most apps such as #Fedilab. Moderation is at the heart of this new app on the Fedi. The success of the project depends on it.

Moderation is local and comes from the community. No one is chosen as a moderator; you earn trust by being a regular member, by helping with good reports, and by not breaking the rules. That trust lets you moderate your own area. At first, the people who run the app do the moderation, until locals earn it. The usual tools are here too: block, mute, report, filters.

Your private messages are end-to-end encrypted, so no one, not even a moderator, can read them. That is the point. If someone abuses you there, you report it from your own device and block them, and the rule above already stops strangers from messaging you at all.

You are anonymous to other users, and your location is never more precise than your city, not even for the server itself, so no one can find or target a neighbor. Every account needs a real email, no temporary ones. That won't stop every fake, but it makes mass fake accounts much harder, and each account ties to an address that can be banned. And a new account cannot send a private message to an established user unless that user interacts first.

For the worst case: if a whole local group of moderators becomes bad and abuses its power, one report to the top is enough to remove all of them together. Local power is real, but no group can control a whole area. It won't fix bad people, but it stops them from spreading.

@apps Will there be some kind of web-of-trust feature so people can verify that another user is a "valid" user? I think WoT systems will be very important in the future of social networks. People can retain privacy while pseudonymous with WoT while it becomes very difficult for trolls, bots, foreign agents etc to slip in with WoT, this is the best tool we have against such things but I don't think any communities really use WoT aside from places like Lobste.rs that has a public tree of invites (very cool and useful)

If it's outside the scope of this project it would be a really cool future project for someone to work on. I've put a lot of thought into this issue

Yes, this is similar to WoT but with a fundamental difference: you grant trust with human review of them.
