  • @aimee@mastodon.nz great suggestions, thanks! Science magazines would be great reading material :)

  • @julian Aeon? New Scientist? As for books - SO MANY (mostly sci-fi) :P Read Transmetropolitan? Or Afrian Tchaikovsky's work? Also, the Discworld novels :)

  • Jonathan Haidt's been doing a media tour to promote his and Catherine Price's new book, The Amazing Generation.

After watching the duo's segment on The Daily Show, it's inspired my wife and I to try a digital sabbath on Saturdays again.

Part of why it failed in the past (multiple times, I'm sad to say) was that we didn't have anything physical to read. We'd start making small concessions ("I'm reading a Kindle, it's ok"), leading to more concessions ("I'm only using my phone to look something up"), and pretty soon we'd be back on our phones again.

So, fedi, any suggestions for book series' and (print) magazines to subscribe to?

We're probably going to subscribe to Macleans, but it's monthly now, so we need more suggestions!

Bonus if it's Canadian content, but not a hard requirement.

We'll probably do Chirp for the kids, too.

  • So NodeBB tests have been failing for the past few days because coveralls.io is down.

Coveralls is a code coverage bot that is free for open source projects. We integrated it into our workflow years ago and it's been trucking along fine all these years.

While coveralls being down technically prevents us from running our tool to launch a new version, we could always just do it manually.

Their outage page is here: https://status.coveralls.io/

They are on day 3 of the outage and have absolutely no idea when things will come back up.

    This paragraph is worded curiously:

    > We want to be transparent with you: after two full days of working directly with our hosting provider’s account team, we still do not have an ETA for service restoration. Despite having internal sponsorship within our provider’s organization, we have been unable to get the traction needed to resolve what appears to have been an automated action, one that no one on their side has taken ownership of causing or fixing.

    (Emphasis mine.)

Perhaps I have been reading too many AI-doomer articles. This sounds like an AI agent went in and started deleting shit.

The post mortem is going to be very very very interesting.

cc @mariusor@metalhead.club, because he started an HN thread about it

#moim_live #fedidev I'm building an open source ActivityPub service called "Moim" — 모임 in Korean, meaning gathering or meetup. It started as a federated RSVP service, but I realized I wanted to connect people even beyond events. Events are where people come together, yes — but places carry meaning on their own, even in quiet, ordinary moments. So Moim is about helping people feel connected: through events, and through the simple act of sharing where they are. Right now, I'm focusing on three areas: CRM for Event Organizers A proper SaaS-like experience built for people who run events. I'm actively reaching out to organizers to shape this. A Federated RSVP Service I want Moim's RSVP experience to feel just as polished as anything outside the Fediverse — and ideally, better. Being federated shouldn't mean settling for less. A Check-in Sharing System I miss what Foursquare Swarm used to be. I want to bring that feeling back, built for the Fediverse. I don't know yet if I'm building the right thing. But I'll keep going, and do my best to make it something worth using. If I'm ready, I will officially announce to public.

I’m excited to be speaking at #FOSDEM about leading #change to #opensource alternatives. Are you interested in learning more on why change is as much about people and culture as it is about technology?I’ll share my personal lessons from real-world transitions to #FOSS solutions, building resilient digital ecosystems, and helping teams adopt open source with confidence.Cu there!Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2026 at 16:30More details: https://fosdem.org/2026/schedule/event/7YMJST-how-to-lead-change-to-open-source/#DigitalSovereignty #Leadership

@mike @Gina well, there is a way to be there for the talkslive.fosdem.org/watch/janson (and similar links for the other rooms, you can get to them from fosdem.org/2026/schedule/ )there is no chance for you (or me, this year) to go to the best part of FOSDEM, which is everything that is happening outside the talks, but to some extent the streaming is actually *better* for watching talks than being there

I think that if we really want to stop #chatcontrol we need to change how we tell the story. On the #fediverse we are a bunch of tech savvy people and we can articulate, understand and also have arguments on technical matters, but the real consensus pools are somewhere else, and they speak another language.Chatcontrol is like violating mail confidentiality. All regulations of nearly all countries guarantee that letters and correspondence are confidential. This is what should be told to people, that the regulation aims at removing this right. It's like the post office will read and evaluate each and every envelope they receive (and who says that they will not?).
