Hi #fediverse.
-
@Pepijn I grew up with neighbors who had horses, so I rode them quite a lot (mostly the nice girl Dusty, not her sorta asshole stallion Smoke; on a good day he'd let a boy on but he was unimpressed).
I do live rural but not enough to really justify a horse of my own.
How are city people ever gonna see a horse? With cops?
-
Hi #fediverse. We need to talk about something.
While talking to a colleague about how I recently learned most people have never sat on a cow it came up that she has never sat on a horse. Like, not even once during childhood.
Another colleague admitted they also have never sat on a horse.
My hypothesis is that most people have at one point in their life sat on a horse.

Have you sat on a horse?

@Pepijn
at least on a Pony or Mule;
probably a proper horse too.(My interactions with Cows were rather less friendly; they're stooopid and crowd-followers. But they're tasty.)
-
@diazona @robynredbreast I guess the fact that I see that as an obviously normal thing to do suggests there may be an issue of perspective here. ๐
@josh0 @robynredbreast hehe yeah probably
Just to be clear, by "pony ride" you don't mean "ask your friend who lives on a farm if you can ride one of their ponies", right? That's the only kind of pony ride I would have been aware of as a kid, and it was definitely not a normal thing to do.

@Pepijn I attended a riding day camp run by the county parks and recreation department for several summers

@diazona @robynredbreast no no. Like people hire pony rides for their kidsโ birthday parties. A person shows up with a small horse at their house, and lets the kids ride it.
There were also pony rides at a lot of the parks and zoos I went to as a kid.

@josh0 @robynredbreast ๐ yeah makes sense... I learned that that's a thing at some point after I grew up and entered the "real world". (Though to this day I have never seen a real party where this was happening)

When I was a kid, a fair would have a pony ride as one of the activities. Even my (well within the city) elementary school had pony rides at some of its fairs.
The ponies were trucked in and a round pen would be set up. Kids would sit on the ponies as they walked around in circles around the pen. Itโd cost so many tickets for a few minutes (and the tickets cost money to buy).

@equiraptor Whoa your school had fairs? Fancy! ๐ฉ

@Pepijn Yes! When I was a teenager, my sister and I would go horse riding together.

@Pepijn this data is skewed. Theres no way that many people have sat on a horse outside of the Midwest and or south.
I have seen horses all over the world. I have sat on them in a few of those places.

@Pepijn My Dad had me on a horse at age two. He and the stable master got involved in a conversation, and meanwhile the horse apparently got tired of waiting, so he took off with me in the saddle. By the time Dad organized a search party the horse brought me back. I was laughing and having a great time! He didnโt tell Mom until years after they were divorced, as he was afraid she would have clobbered him. She probably would have. I still love riding!

@Pepijn Yes, but I grew up in a rural area where people not only owned horses they used them for work in some capacities (and still do).

@Pepijn I did when I was in kindergarten in the early 80s and I freaked out, never bothered to try again. Only reason I was there was a school field trip to a ranch. My own kid hasn't been on one.
