NodeBB v4.6.0 — Topic templating, AP fixes, SCSS updates, and more

NodeBB Development
1 1 2
  • We have just released v4.6.0 of NodeBB, containing fixes to our ActivityPub integration, minor fixes with SCSS, and some new functionality with topic templating.

    :globe_with_meridians: ActivityPub Fixes

    • WordPress blogs can be properly pulled into NodeBB (via their URL) now
    • Fixed an error when moving a remote topic to another category
      • This also fixed the issue where moved topics didn't update topic/post counters
    • Fixed bug where NodeBB could not properly process Link headers when it contained the standalone crossorigin directive
    • Notifications for replies to topics made in remote categories now show the appropriate user
    • Fixed bug where remote users were not able to post to a local category if registered-users privilege was removed (now checks fediverse pseudo-user)
    • Nested remote categories can now be removed from the ACP
    • Remote categories can be renamed for de-duplication purposes
    • Improved title generation for quote-posts

    Core fixes

    • Persona theme now shows hidden (zero-character) links in post content
    • _variables.scss page in ACP > Appearance can now override Bootstrap variables
    • A template can be provided in a category's settings. This template is auto-populated in the composer when a new topic is being authored.

Transparency update: Web framework integration progress We're sharing a public project board to track our progress on web framework integrations for #Fedify, work commissioned by the Sovereign Tech Fund (@sovtechfund@mastodon.social). You can follow along at: https://github.com/orgs/fedify-dev/projects/1 About this work The Sovereign Tech Fund invested in Fedify to expand its ecosystem through official integrations with popular web frameworks. This investment enables developers to add federation capabilities to their existing applications without changing their technology stack. Notably, some of these integrations were completed between our initial application submission and the official kickoff of the #STF investment. This demonstrates both our commitment to the project and the community's active development momentum. Current status Already completed: Next.js integration supporting both App Router and Pages Router (completed before STF kickoff) Elysia integration optimized for the Bun ecosystem (completed before STF kickoff) In progress: Fastify integration (PR currently under review) Upcoming: Koa integration Comprehensive documentation for all integrations Why this matters These integrations make Fedify accessible to developers across different JavaScript ecosystems and runtime environments. Each integration follows established patterns from our Express and h3 integrations, ensuring consistency and ease of adoption. Investment details Fedify has been awarded a service agreement by the Sovereign Tech Fund for this work, with a budget of €‎32,000 and completion target of November 30, 2025. The Sovereign Tech Agency supports the development, improvement, and maintenance of open digital infrastructure through investments like this. We believe in transparent development and welcome community input and contributions. #ActivityPub #SovereignTechFund #opensource

@HausAmWestbahnhof My blog has been federated for years, and not only do I still have a Mastodon account, which is what I use primarily, but I also continue to use my Friendica account, which I use to write structured and formatted texts that I don't publish on the blog, long replies to accounts I follow, and also to automatically reshare my blog posts.A federated blog used in conjunction with a Mastodon account is like a camper used in conjunction with a scooter: with the former, you can take your home around the world; with the latter, you use it to get around town or to a village festival. And a Friendica account has the same advantage. Except that instead of being a scooter, it's like a dirt bike (amphibious. With a small tent on top 🤣): a little less agile than a scooter, but very versatile.@pfefferle

Running a community in the Fediverse means balancing openness with safety. Every year, @iftas takes the pulse of administrators, moderators, and community managers with their Annual Needs Assessment. This survey helps identify what’s working, where support is needed, and which tools can make a difference for those keeping decentralized spaces safe. The 2025 survey is now openTake part in the IFTAS Needs Assessment (5–10 minutes).Take the survey now(If you haven’t seen them before, you can also take a look at last year’s report)Last year’s responses represented moderators of over 4.3 million accounts across ActivityPub platforms. With WordPress now the largest group of federating instances, it’s especially important for our community of hosts, site admins, and moderators to be heard.Moderation in WordPress: From Site-Wide to Personal ControlsWe recently introduced a major update to the ActivityPub plugin for WordPress: personalized and site-wide moderation tools.Site administrators can now set domain, keyword, and actor-level blocks that protect the entire site.Individual users can fine-tune their own experience with personal blocks, managed directly from their profiles.Content is checked against both global and personal rules—so moderation works at every level. These improvements directly address needs raised in previous IFTAS surveys, making moderation more discoverable, flexible, and effective for WordPress communities in the Fediverse.Your Input MattersIFTAS uses the Needs Assessment to guide tools, policies, and advocacy that reflect the real-world challenges of moderators—especially those in under-resourced communities. The more representative the responses, the stronger the outcomes for everyone. If you’re running a federating WordPress site, please consider:Filling out the survey yourself.Sharing it with other admins, moderators, and community organizers.Reminding folks that it’s anonymous, quick, and impactful.Take the 2025 Fediverse Needs AssessmentTogether, we can keep building a safer, healthier Fediverse—one that reflects the needs of its communities.
