@Edent @jdlh @north @Profpatsch I would love to see this initiative happen outside of fediforum where there is no hurdle of needing to pay money to participate. this is also an issue I have but quite a bit of time into researching over the years and I would love to participate in these discussions! maybe we can find time zone that would work well for @hongminhee too

As a start, is there a keyword and hashtag we can agree on to make this topic more discoverable? I obviously like #GloballyInclusive but maybe another word is in use already.

@jdlh @liaizon @Edent @Profpatsch @hongminhee Well, I think that depends on the goal(s). For me, personally, it's pretty much just Unicode / IDNs. I won't even try to speak for anybody else.
As for #GloballyInclusive, I feel like that would go well beyond technical solutions and quickly into #politics and other #inclusiveness topics, which I'm sure isn't the goal here (not that they aren't very important goals otherwise).

@north @Edent @Profpatsch @hongminhee @liaizon re "a time… that works for everybody", I am in UTC-7 time zone. If I read rightly, this group already includes people in UTC+1 and UTC+9. That means probably no time will be waking hours for everybody. It is hard being #GloballyInclusive ! :-) But we do have access to asynchronous collaboration tools.

Down side for me personally: I don't travel much these days. But nothing is impossible. #i18n #GloballyInclusive #fediverse #Multilingual

Yes, likewise. For me it's "UTF-8 everywhere or GTFO".
We can't continue with design assumptions from the 1970s about what "acceptable" characters are in text.
Will it increase inclusivity? I don't know. I hope so.
Will there be security issues? I doubt it will be worse than it is now.
Will it surface some bugs? I think so. And that's a good thing. -
