  • @operand However, they experience those problems in a *completely different way*, which not only is their userbase unprepared for, but the pre-existing experience of fediverse users does not exactly prepare for!

  • @mcc I guess you could simultaneously see this as a success and a failure for ATproto: decentralization is possible... but you immediately get a lot of the same problems ActivityPub has that ATProto ostensibly solved.

  • This is why—although, now Blacksky is letting me "see through" Bluesky's worst moderation decisions, I'm glad, because Bluesky's moderation is weird and arbitrary—I think it's a downside of the network, and Mastodon made the right decision not offering this feature. Fediverse defederation forces a degree of soft group consensus on moderation: it's possible to say "if you're talking to X, I don't want to talk to *you*". On Bluesky we are all ghosts walking through walls and this can't be enforced

  • Oh, and let's consider, for a moment, the downsides of an individual user being able to "opt out" of moderation decisions. The problem with misbehavior on social media is force multipliers. One person harassing you is no problem; one person and their 3000 friends is a big problem. Imagine Bluesky and Blacksky ban user X but Trumpsky lets X keep posting. Now their 3000 friends— still in Bluesky's good graces— can see their posts calling to harass you, AND can zero-friction zip over to yell at you

Hi #fediverse! I'm working on Hackers' Pub, a small #ActivityPub-powered social platform for developers and tech folks. We're currently drafting a content #moderation (#flag/#report) system and would really appreciate any feedback from those who have experience with federated moderation—we're still learning. Some ideas we're exploring: Protecting reporter anonymity while giving reported users enough context to understand and improve Graduated responses (warning → content removal → suspension) rather than jumping to bans Using LLM to help match reports to code of conduct provisions Supporting ActivityPub Flag activity for cross-instance reports Our guiding principle is that moderation should be about growth, not punishment. Expulsion is the last resort. Here's the full draft if you're curious: https://github.com/hackers-pub/hackerspub/issues/192. If you've dealt with moderation in federated contexts, what challenges did you run into? What worked well? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

ok yeah. we don't have the follower thing is I think the main thing. Which I could totally see being added. It should essentially be the same as subscribing to a community. The trust cafe thing is great though as it has a 0 to 100 sorta percent rating system so 100 is like subscribing/following and 0 would be like blocking and the numbers in between sorta give more nuance. I believe the way it works everything not rated is treated as 50.

Mastodon, Matrix, ActivityPub, XMPP, ATProto. whatever your flavor of decentralization is, there’s room for you. Submit your proposal to the Decentralized Communication devroom at FOSDEM before the end of this week! fosdem.org/submit #FOSDEM #Fediverse #ActivityPubFOSDEM 2026
