Hey, does AltStore have its own Mastodon server as the TechCrunch article references (the link seems dead)? Also noticed that Mastodon GmbH Managed Hosting page links AltStore. Is this up and running? Still planned?

Perché lo faccio.
Il #Fediverso nasce decentralizzato per essere l’antitesi dei mega social guidati dal “capo supremo” di turno che decide chi vedere, cosa leggere e perfino cosa pensare. Lì hai una sola opzione: se non ti piace l’aria che tira, te ne vai e basta.
Nel Fediverso è diverso. Se la tua istanza non ti piace più, non sei in gabbia. Ne puoi scegliere un’altra, oppure fare il salto definitivo e costruirti casa tua, un’istanza tutta tua, che poi colleghi alle altre. Non chiedi permesso a nessuno, giri la chiave nel tuo server e sei dentro al gioco.
Da qui nasce la domanda inevitabile: se quasi tutti si accalcano su poche mega istanze, il problema non si ripresenta uguale? Sì. È esattamente quello che voglio evitare.
Per questo ho lasciato masto.host. È stata una palestra perfetta per imparare a gestire un’istanza, con la sicurezza che il lavoro pesante, aggiornamenti e backup, lo facevano loro. Ma proprio perché sono bravi, finisce che ci si appoggia tutti a loro. Risultato? Collo di bottiglia. Se cade masto.host, traballa mezzo Fediverso.
Stesso discorso per le istanze enormi, strapiene di account. Se vanno giù, se cambiano regole, se prendono una direzione che non ti piace, quello non è davvero essere decentralizzati, è solo aver spostato il problema in un altro palazzo. Sei di nuovo tagliato fuori.
Io invece ci credo nello spirito opposto, quello delle tante piccole istanze ben distribuite. Qualcuno che ha voglia e capacità ne apre una, tu scegli dove stare. Se un giorno non ti ci ritrovi più, cambi istanza come fosse un vestito, senza drammi. Prova a fare lo stesso da una mega istanza e poi mi racconti.
Perché lo faccio? Per dare un’alternativa. Perché nella decentralizzazione vera ci credo davvero.🙏
