This is a really great, technical overview of how the fediverse works behind the scenes. And really makes you appreciate that it works at all.

One caveat I might have, and this is not an issue with the article, of course, and I generally agree that "the fediverse needs more apps", but!
This is where the Atmosphere has a big advantage.
Yes, some of us might prefer to have separate accounts on different servers and platforms, and keep individual hobbies, interests, and other layers of our personality separate. I think that's fine.
But some of us might prefer to manage one account, and until nomadic identity is widely supported across the fediverse, having more apps to sign up for might not entice everyone.
Just a thought!

To elaborate a bit more: Yes, let's make more fediverse apps. But maybe primarily promote them *outside* of the fediverse, as a way to bring in more people who may not be interested in Mastodon.

@nelfan Yeah, it's so much easier to get started if you don't have to build a whole backend for your app.
But I do also wonder how popular these apps are. Honestly, the fact that so few people care about "the protocol" and just hang out where people they care about are gives me a lot of hope for the fediverse.
We just have to be ready when the VC money finally runs out.
