How do you make friends in the #Fediverse? I'm hoping to rely less on big tech, proprietary software for communication like #Discord, however it's incredibly difficult to convince my contacts to migrate and it just feel really lonely out here.
@NovemDecimal The introductions tag tends to work for getting some initial exposure... as does AskFedi, apparently. But now that you've done both, I'd say: stick around for a while, post cool things... and, most-importantly, interact with people! Even if it's the tiniest "I like that" comment, it can make someone's day; and the old saw of "do for others what you'd like others to do for you" is as true here as elsewhere (:

@NovemDecimal in my quest to try out Matrix I've been joining every room I can find to see which i vibe with. Similar to how I started on Mastodon. And it's going great! It's like starting on the internet again.

@NovemDecimal hashtags yeah, but i'd recommend butting hashtags in the end, because many clients format those more nicely :)

@NovemDecimal Follow hastags of topics you're interested in to get to know people of likewise interests. Follow a lot of people to see if they write about things, you're interested in - and chime in on conversations you think you might have something to say or add ← don't be shy there. I have been thinking about creating a Matrix account.
Right now, I am weighing Matrix against other options like IRC and XMPP.

Interesting, I didn't know that you have to put hashtags at the end for them to get a nice looking format.
Mastodon has changed a lot since my last time I've been on the Fediverse, those formatted hashtags were not a thing back then, if my memory doesn't deceive me.

@NovemDecimal I just gave up hoping my contacts would join the Fediverse and instead interact with people new to me there.

@NovemDecimal look for topics relevant to your interest, browse the federated timelines, spot posts that are interesting, follow people, contribute positively to discussions when you can
